Which type of graphics do you think would work with this game?

Hey guys!

I’m looking to create a game tycoon/simulation game although I’m stuck on deciding what types or graphics and what type of camera to create it in.

I have narrowed it down to these:

Graphic types:

  • 8 Bit Pixels
  • Isometric/Pixel
  • As realistic as I can make them

Camera Types:

  • Side scroller
  • Isometric/top down
  • 3D

I’m pulled towards a side scroller isometric/pixel tycoon/simulation, although I’m not certain if that would work as well as I’m hoping it would.

So what type of tycoon/simulation game would you choose to play based on the graphics? Would pixel graphics put you off? Any feedback would be highly appreciated!

I would say…Semi realistic 3d graphics. :stuck_out_tongue:
Semi realistic 3d graphics , in most cases, always seems to suit games like this.
It’s visually appealing, makes it more fun and little kids will want to play it too. :stuck_out_tongue:
Cel Shaded might be a great option too.

But there are no vote option choices for those there. :stuck_out_tongue:

Would you be able to link me to an example of what your take on Semi realistic 3D graphics you mean? :stuck_out_tongue:

The Sims would be semi-realistic. Not too cartoonish, but not entirely real.

Semi realistic can fall into alot/a number of categories.
And it’s a stretch too.

Yeah, Sims is a good example too.
I agree.

But in my case, some great examples, are like Metroid Prime 1 for Gamecube.

Or

Or

But the last one, the DK Tropical Freeze game, is possibly one of the Best examples, of partial semi realistic graphics.
But more on the cartoony side.
I would say that anything, close to or sort of similar to the Tropical freeze type graphics, would be a great choice for a game like yours.

But it’s up to you.
Good Luck!

Firstly thank you for your feedback!

I see what you mean now, I’m starting to sway more towards your idea and how that could work much better.

What is your opinion on isometric buildings?
e.g.

Do you think isometric is too cartoony?

Nope. Not at all.
Personally, I don’t think isometric is too cartoony.
Those two pics are kinda cute.

If you want to make it isometric camera style. That’s quite okay for the type tycoon/simulation type of game that you want to make.
The pics you showed me look like 2d images. But then again, it could be 3d models with Cel shaded graphics, or cartoon style graphics.

In the case of the pics I showed you.
“Especially the Donkey Kong tropical Freeze pic.”
You could make the game with a 3d isometric camera view style and have a semi realistic/cartoony graphical look, for your game buildings, enviroments etc.
Which might be more cutesy, crystally yet fun to look at.
Or if you desire, an isometric game, with a Cel Shaded cartoony look, similar to those 2 building pics that you showed me.

I would also suggest, a type of, isometric postioned player usable free to control moving camera, that can rotate around your city, scenery, or building landscape.

Or, if the game is isometric looking, with 3D models.
A camera that can move above, around, and snap back to default, isometric view(s) when the player is done rotating the camera. Or finished, looking at buildings or objects, behind your front objects, or further in the background of your scene.

I hope that helps.
PS: Only you alone know how you want your games graphics to look.
Whether it may be similar to DK freeze style or Cel shaded look, like in your pics.
Any one of those artistic Graphical looks, could work well, for this tycoon style game that you want to make.
I hope you achieve making your dream game!
Many Blessings and good luck to you!

  • What platform are you targeting?
  • How much budget do you have? and how is the project scale?
  • How is the gameplay?

i get confused about “3D”? what does it mean? Is it the player can rotate the camera whatever they want?

One thing you should probably try is make some mock ups. Spend some time making a simple scene per style. For one, it will give you a good example of what your style will end up looking like, but more than that, it will give you a good understanding of how much you will get out of a style for time put into it.

Trying to make a scene will provide a much better estimate for the amount of work involved. You could easily find a realistic style takes much more work as the levels feel barren and require much more detail to not feel like a husk, or you could find that pixel art requires you to pay much more time and attention to the palette as the scene as a whole is a compete clusterfuck of colors.

  • The main platform is PC and MAC but there is possibilities to expand onto other platforms if the game did turn out to be a success.
  • Budget isn’t something id like to publicly announce
  • Yes, 3D is where the player can rotate the camera to any angle.

Firstly thank you for your response.

I’ve been having a play around the past few days with the graphics and I’m still very undecided between pixel or semi realistic.

In my opinion Pixel graphics are more eye pleasing and would take less work although I’m not sure if the mature players would be interested in playing a game with such graphics.

Where as semi realistic sets a better scene and gives off a better feel for the game, but might not be that appealing the younger players.

also @BrandyStarbrite , what are your opinions?

Well, I would say…go with what your heart tells you to go Hittauru.
Only you alone know which graphic style would be best suitable for your game.
And which you think is cooler for it too.

Yay!!

Speaking for myself (and my friends lol)… if the game is fun the graphics don’t matter. I do prefer less cartoony “kiddy” style of graphics (the kind that are so common in the majority of mobile games). But pixel / sprite-based graphics are awesome. There are a ton of us older developers (and game players) who are very much into the whole retro gaming scene. Pixel graphics are not going to turn us away. Heck, just a couple months ago I bought an NES (as in the original 8-bit console) and a Genesis. My NES library is at 38 games now. Also, if you look around you find retro remakes are quite popular as well.

Personally, I don’t care much for the vector graphics games mainly because they all look so “little kiddy”. Sure the art work is very nice as far as the artists are good but I just don’t care for the style. I don’t get impressed by 3D because at this point I have seen screenshot after screenshot and video after video showing “gee whiz” lighting and effects. Sure it is cool to look at but I was burned way too many times in the past with “cutting edge” “next gen” graphics oriented games being absolutely no fun at all. If a game is a lot of fun then I’d probably buy it even if it uses the “little kiddy” style of vector graphics.

I strongly vote for isometric pixel, both for personal taste and because semi-objectively-but-also-subjectively I think 3D looks terribly ugly with these games (and gets stale/old very soon, contrary to good isometric pixel graphics which can still look fresh after a decade).

I’ll be evil now and mention Parkitect, which was mentioned in your other tycoon post.
[EVIL]The semi-isometric approach looks good but augh! The 3D approach looks so ugly and makes everything looks bland in a bad way.[/EVIL] :stuck_out_tongue:

Think pixel art wouldn’t be a bad choice either. Remember games like Theme Hospital? Ol’ good days
