I mean, this blows my mind. Only 8 people made this.
I mean, this blows my mind. Only 8 people made this.
Yes, it’s a very nice game.
I hope that one day someone will say that about my Zombie FPS game after looking at the videos of it (as the game won’t be released to public)… ![]()
I guess I just don’t see what everyone else does.
Sure, 8 people ‘made’ it, but it’s also been in development since 2004 (if not earlier, that’s when they first started showing screens and videos afaik - and it was being done in UT2004). Gameplay-wise their latest ‘Running Man’ release is still just a very barebones FPS.
I have this sinking feeling that had it stayed a UT2004 mod (even updating to UT3 / UDK along the way!) it’d be much further along and look much better right now.
But nonetheless, grats to them for making one of the most visually polished Unity games so far.
They did switch to UT3 along the way, and then last year they switched to Unity.
Ah, makes sense, but they don’t really specify anywhere on their site so I wasn’t sure. Interesting that they don’t show any shots or movies from the UT3 version - they all go straight from the UT2004 one to Unity.
O-o I guess I just don’t see how it’s so amazing any which way. I mean, It’s by no means bad, but it’s not uber amazing either. Definitely not what I would expect from an 8 man team after 6 years.
Heck, I’ve seen some mod teams of one or two create something that looks like that in a month or two. But, whatever. To each their own.
It seems from the videos and images to be 4-5 different people, 4 humanoid droids (with the same mesh and different textures to make them slightly different), and one mech. Besides that, a lot of repeating textures and simple rooms with boxes in them.
O-o I don’t mean to discredit them, and maybe I’m missing something, but it’s quite bland to me. The guns are detailed… uhm… So I guess that’s a plus.
Is it just me that doesn’t see this as all that exciting?
You can see your feet! That’s graphically intense.
I have to agree with a couple of the posts above… whilst it is good, i don’t think there is anything overly amazing about it. The ‘Running Man’ vid is actually quite bland… square rooms, not very detailed (or so it seems) and sparsely populated.
I did really like ‘The Vault’, but that is only a single area.
So, yes very nice, but no, didn’t blow my mind.
I love the feet, what’s with all the FPS and invisible self? You gotta see your own feet.
This game is very well done! Maybe the best unity game so far.
This unity game also looks kick ass:
No wonder developers release so much crap when no one appreciates the true gems when they come. ![]()
I’ve played probably every worthwhile shooter out there and this game has the best shooting action of them all, and it’s still just a tidbit of the real game.
The graphics aren’t the best, but no one claims they are, but the game itself shows more promise than any AAA game I’ve been following lately.
It also seems a lot of people fail to grasp the concept that these games are just playable teasers of the final game.
Well don’t just eulogize, enlighten us. What exactly are we seeing that’s any better than every FPS tech demo I’ve ever seen? All I’m seeing is basic FPS controls, and incredibly basic bots. There’s virtually no AI. There are no gameplay mechanics beyond point and shoot. The graphics are nice, but there’s zero variety.
What does it promise exactly? To me, it promises “you too can walk down endless repetitive corridors while metal men run toward you and let you shoot them.”
I’m not saying it won’t be good. I’m saying they’ve failed to prove it will be good, or even hint that it might. Exactly which part of this promises more than every AAA game you know of? It’s quite polished, but you could mod something in Unreal 3 in a few weeks which was polished.
Seriously, I’m not dissing, trolling or whatever else are fashioned words for being a miserable git. I’m genuinely struggling to see what it is I’m supposed to see.
Um… no. Thirty seconds is a teaser. Sixty seconds, maybe. The running man video runs for ten minutes and you’ve seen everything there is to see in the first minute. Then it’s just the same thing over and over and over ad nauseum. As a teaser, it’s bloated to the point I’d be tempted to call it a Zeppelin.
A lot of people are judging this like it’s a full game. That’s why I said what’s currently released are teasers, or gameplay previews more specifically.
Seeing as you can’t see for yourself what’s better in Running Man and Bullseye than virtually any other shooter I’ll have a hard time explaining it to you, but I’ll give it my best.
Take Modern Warfare, Half-life 2 and F.E.A.R for instance which are all hailed as great shooters.
Half-life 2, like it’s predecessor was praised for everything, but mainly its story driven singleplayer. One thing no reviewer mentioned was how unsatisfying it was to fire your weapons in Half-life 2. I literally cringed in my seat the first time I fired the pistol in Half-life 2 because I knew this would stick out like a sore thumb all throughout what was otherwise an exceptional experience.
Modern Warfare, represented the new breed of multiplayer FPS’s and was praised for its realism and great shooting mechanics, yet no one mentioned how every shooting sound in Modern Warfare sounds as if made by someone spitting into a microphone.
F.E.A.R, while it didn’t garner the rave reviews of the 2 games above it did receive huge amounts of praise for it’s over the top shooting mechanics, yet I found them to be average.
For me the core part of a game, the thing you have to do a hundred thousand times by the end of the game, is by far the most important. I couldn’t care less about story, graphics, AI, animations, HDR, bloom etc. if the core gameplay isn’t there.
Just like jumping is essential to Mario, shooting is essential to a FPS.
All these games receive top marks even when their core aspect, the shooting, is nowhere close to the level it should have been. Half-life 2, in particular, has no excuse, it came out like 5 years after Counter-Strike which was made with the old version of its own engine yet surpassed it in every aspect of the game.
F.E.A.R was hailed as having the most amazing shooting action ever, yet it also was bested by player mods created ages before it with inferior technology.
My point is that the moment I shot my first bullet in Bullseye I knew this game would be spectacular. If you didn’t get that feeling then you never will and you surely don’t need to as you obviously don’t notice these things anyway. ![]()
If I’m to comment on your post in particular then it would be this:
I don’t care about the bots, the AI, the gameplay mechanics, the variety or the repetitiveness, yet you weigh them the same as “point and shoot”. Point and shoot is 99% of a first person shooter and Interstellar Marines nailed it from the start. That’s why I think this game is better than almost anything out there. That’s why it will be great.
This is where you get cocky. ![]()
You and nearly every developer out there couldn’t create something this good in a million years, yet you think you can because you don’t notice the subtle details which sets this apart from the rest.
Of course it’s better to be “ignorant” and not be this “picky” about things in life, but for us that are a gem like this is something worth praising. ![]()
That being said I play and enjoy most great games, but I cream my pants when I see something like this. ![]()
There is only one FPS that was released the past 2 years thats only point and shoot: Serious Sam HD ![]()
If it was done in a similar fun and engaging (and challenging way) in the end, it would likely draw a massive amount of interest ![]()
If they ruin it to a tech demo like Crysis, well then it will likely flop like crysis too.
Its a solid start and I’m looking forward to see what the more than teaser class versions of it will be alike.
Well you may not care about AI, gameplay, variety or repetitiveness, but I think you’ll find you’re in a tiny minority. Tell you what, you release a game with no AI, no gameplay, no variety, and if it sells 99% as many as those with, I’ll double your money.
And where you resort to ad hominem attacks.
You have no idea what I could create, or indeed what I already have created.
No, I think you don’t have to because Unreal 3 already has those subtle details and they don’t need to be created when you make a mod. Of course, Interstellar Marines is probably 1,000 times better than Unreal 3!!!1111 one one.
Well - leaving aside that you’re back to ad hominem attacks again - I did ask you to educate me. I can’t say as you’ve actually made me any the wiser though. Essentially you’ve told me that you’ll buy just about anything if the basic controls are ok. I can’t help thinking that if this was still being made in Unreal or UDK or something, a large percentage of the people saying how brilliant it is would be saying precisely the opposite.
I think the game looks slick and professional, and is different to the fare of most indies. Can’t say it’s anything like mind blowing but then I’m not a FPS nut.
Saying that, the opinion that what they have put out is pre-release, gameplay previews, and that the core game mechanics are really good, doesn’t seem so unreasonable does it?
I’ll bite. Go back to the very top of this thread and read the question on the poll. “Does it blow your mind?”. Nobody here is treating it like it’s a full game - we’re answering the simple question posed: at the moment, no - it doesn’t, because it isn’t a game yet. Your mind is blown because obviously the actual mechanic of shooting is all you care about - the rest of us, well, we need more.
Furthermore, they’re charging for full access to their ‘previews’ - so they’re fair game to be judged as is.
I’ll glaze over this one because I’m admittedly biased - I worked on one of the above franchises. After all the focus testing, and implementing all the tweaks on feedback, suffice to say - opinions are like assholes (everybody has one). What one person loves another hates - just because they weren’t to your liking doesn’t mean they were wrong. Those shooters went through many, many hands before they hit the shelves - and the way they play represents the way most people enjoyed. There are always fringe cases - and the fact that you have such sharp opinions on the top shooters actually pegs you as being in that minority honestly.
Tight gun controls don’t win awards all by themselves. They also don’t make a game. It doesn’t matter how well the guns feel if all you’re shooting at is mindless rushing bots and cardboard cutouts. The fact of the matter is, IM currently has good-for-Unity graphics but bland environments, great sound design, fairly tight but incredibly basic gun control, and little to nothing else. It’s nothing mind-blowing. That’s not to take anything away from them - but until they get all their great concept art and pre-vis renders actually replicated within the engine, it’s really not that much more impressive than the myriad of other game mods out there.
Please, enlighten us to the ‘subtle details’ we’re not seeing instead of droning on and on about how we’re just too ‘ignorant’ to see your obvious genius and incredible insight into shooter mechanics. Cocky as you might find it - the gameplay and mechanics they have so far comes standard in engines like UDK. In fact, this game started as a mod in the unreal engine, and it’s entirely likely the feel of the gunplay was heavily influenced by it.
I thought it was awesome
The things that stand out to me in Bullseye are not random things, they’re small things that make it more enjoyable to fire my weapon in Bullseye than in most other games. The sound effects, the feel of the gun when shooting, the feel of the impacts when hitting a target, the targets breaking apart when hit etc.
I love Bullseye and Running Man and I preordered IM the moment it was available. Everything they release shows exceptional promise and I can’t wait. ![]()
I’m not going to pursue this any further because like we can all agree I’m in a tiny minority here.
Key features
- Heavy focus on creating a thick realistic feeling of immersion through graphics, sound and game play.
- Single player or up to four players cooperative game play.
- A number of different interactive environments, ranging from claustrophobic space stations to large outdoor levels.
- Persistent character development and skill system
- Non-linear game play and open ended level design
- Freely customizable weapons simulation
- Captivating epic storyline written with focus on the co-operative part of the game
Combine this with they already have and you get awesome ![]()
It was made with Unity and has a different way of financing its development thats why interstellar marines is interesting to me.
If the game was developed the conventional way with a proven engine I wouldn’t look twice. Its pretty bland. Repetetive runofthemill sci-fi graphics with boring lighting. ok the sharkthing is quite original but its rather silly aswell :).
It seems they have focused quite alot of time on sound though which is gamewise the only thing it has going for itswell from what I have seen.
As far as the shooting is concerened, well I didn’t dislike it but nothing stood out to me compared to lets say MW2.
And remember that this should be a teaser for a future release that we don’t know when it will happen. There are other cool games in the making that Intersteller Marines will have to compete with and I fear that it will look even more dated when it is released than it does at this moment.
I give them my best of luck though because the industry desperatly needs a new way to create quality games and challenge the traditional publisher financed development.
Hope they will someday blow my currently unblown mind.

I actually really liked Bullseye as well, but felt a little let down with Running Man. Something about it just didnt feel as polished as Bullseye, then suddnely being asked to pay (via pre-ordering IM or buying a support medal) part way through playing just left me with a ‘meh’ feeling. Maybe it was the way the gun shoots while moving (usually backwards) from the training robots that didnt quite work as well as it did for Bullseye.
The Vault was pretty nice too, and i make a habit of checking the site regularly for updates on thier progress with the main game and the other preview content they will be releasing.

This is a real danger to them and something i hope they are aware of. You never know, the main game may be much further along than the preview content shows, lets hope it doesnt end up going to waste!
