Why am I getting a low framerate on a fresh project?

I just started my first unity project. I added a plane and a prefab first person controller, however when I test the game its a little bit laggy and runs at a constant 35. Is this normal? I assumed it would be much higher than 35 fps for nothing but a plane.

I’m running on a laptop but I doubt that the specs are the problem… I have an i7, 16 gigs of RAM, and 2 geforce GT 650M cards, just to make the record clear. No other processes are running that could be sapping resources.

With those specs, with the scene as described, you will get many thousands of frames per second unless you’re throttling it by some method such as turning vsync on.
