why are my plane textures getting so white?

hey guys. im putting textures on planes and they turn really light. I dont have any light source on them so I dont under stand why this is happening. any suggestions?

If you drag a Texture straight on to a plane, a Material is automatically created for you. The Material is assigned to the plane, and the Texture you dragged actually gets assigned to that new material.

Click the plane, and look in the inspector, and you should be able to find the material which has been assigned. The new material will be using the "Diffuse" shader, and you should see it has a "Main Color" property which is set to full-white by default. If you double click this colour and adjust it down to a mid-grey, you should end up with lighting on your plane which is more as you would expect.
