Why can't I make a project in the free version?

I have tried all templates but none of them worked it keeps asking for a license.

You still need a license. But it can be a free (personal) license. So just go back to unity.com and get one.

Open Unity Hub. Click the little gear symbol in the upper-right. Click License Management. Click Activate New License and you can select a Unity Personal license.
