People could say jump off a cliff. You don’t have to listen to them.

I could get into specifics but I can sum it up with “old people are tired and that makes them cranky”

This includes me. I am the crankiest

nobody wants you to give up.

but when you have problems and you ask questions on forums, if you are cussing about it and acting dramatic even though you are just doing the same thing everybody else does everyday, it makes it look like you aren’t cut out to do this sort of work.

Keep working on your games, but when you are stressed about it take a break before asking for help.

A good part of those responses you’ve received, as far as I’m aware, were tongue in cheek. Meaning not serious, and joking.

While talking to the people online you don’t see their expression, and don’t hear the intonation of their voice. As a result, you can misinterpret and perceive something “said” (written?) in joking manner as a serious statement, and vice versa.

One of the reasons why people could advise not to go to gamedev is because the road is long, the rewards are dubious, and sometimes you may wonder if the whole thing was even worth it in the first place. But that can happen no matter what path in life you take.

Your life, your decisions.

As @Murgilod mentioned before, you’re right now in at age where you have plenty of free time to try new things and get better of them. When you hit 18…20 years old age, the amount of free time will greatly diminish. Tinkering with unity is not a bad idea, and can result in development of programming skills (or modeling skills). There are worse things you could be doing instead.

One more thing. Just in case.

You’re 11, if I remember correctly, and likely still see at least some adults as authority. “This person says that, they likely know what they’re doing”. The important thing that you should realize that an adult can be wrong, and a person who knows a lot of particular field can hold odd beliefs in another one. In addition to that they can have strong opinion on things, not necessarily good one.

As a result it might make sense to try to determine if the person have a reason for their words or not. That can be done by asking questions (“why do you say that? Why do you think this way?”), which is what you’re doing right now.

Another good idea is to listen people when it is related to life experience or their professional area, and take their opinion with grain of salt, when it touches an unrelated field.

In case of unity and unity forums, for example, if someone says “you should quit game dev” that does not mean you don’t have a “talent” for it. They can’t see the future, and don’t know how your gamedev journey will turn out, although they can make a guess. They likely mean that “things are going to get even harder later”. However, when somebody says - here - that “doing this will result in this and that problem later on”, it is highly likely they’re speaking from experience and it would be a good idea to listen to them.

I agree and I have to say I didn’t plan on quitting game dev from that because honestly game dev is the only thing I even do anymore due to… well lets just say illnesses. also why are you and murgilod seemingly almost instantly replying to my stuff its pretty funny I have to say

lol have to say funniest thing ive heard all day

ye I know thanks, also ive heard that your quite a popular person on the forums so thanks for responding

he he I aint stressed

Dude edit your last post if you are the last comment, dont do 4 in a row. This is not a chat app and thats been pointed out in other threads

As for why people say this, ignore them. I was developing games and programming since I was about 7, and back then there wasnt big enough forums for me to hear the masses otherwise I would have gotten the same advice and maybe even taken it to heart.

Game development is hard, and thats probably what people are trying to communicate. But understand majority on here are adults and wont take time to write something in a “nicer voice”, they will be brutal and harsh and straight to the point. They also can be wrong / over exagerate / talk from their own experiences while ignoring or not understanding others.

If you want to make games, make games. Dont worry about what others say, other than if its to help you get better at making games. Negativity is high on these forums, and mostly its because people are angry with unity or coming here to deal with issues and so it creates a negative mindset in many when posting here.

Someone typing “just give up” may be being sarcastic, may be overexagerating, they may also be a kid too etc etc. Just ignore it and move on.

This isn’t the place for this kind of stuff, it is off topic. Closing.

I am going to reiterate, this is not a “chat”. Do not post multiple one line posts. I would suggest the discord channel if you just want to randomly chit-chat.
