I’m talking about the ones with the DVD software and shit. They should know that we are smart enough to know that they are trying to rip us off. Why not troll some other boards like twilight, where people will actually buy their fake and gay software?
This forum uses a very common free forum software. Spammers can target forums which share this technology, because their bot scripts know how to post to this type of forum.
Note to everyone, while we’re on the subject: moderators are always happy to receive reports of any spam you find in threads by PM or whatever. It is much more helpful to send a report than to add a lolcat or spam can picture to the end of the thread and it probably takes about the same amount of time
Spammers target everyone. They use bots, so its basically free for them to go on as many forms as possible and spam. Even if they only make one sale from it, its still profit for them.
As one of the people that cleans this stuff out I just wish there was more variety in the spam… 99% of it is that stupid DVD ripper and the other 1% is how to perfect your golf swing
Well I’m glad its not spam like I have seen previously on another game dev forum. Let’s just say, someone in the porn industry tried their damnedest to flood those forums. Misleading posts had dozens of embedded videos and pictures. So I am very glad the spam here is PG.
I seem to remember some site I visit having this problem and they had to create an invisible first/default forum, basically something that made the bots think they were posting legitmately (AFAIK).
Think of it as a much dumber variation on Google’s spidering system, only it looks for features common to popular web forum software packages. Effects of these spam spiders could vary between forum software versions / brands and any known exploits these software packages may have. As such, updates to forum software should be installed regularly to close any security holes that might be present.
Other steps that can be taken include customizing the forum skin to obfuscate common functions from spiders seeking out fixed configurations, as well as disabling or removing sections of code not specifically used in managing these forums. (Such as any built-in web-based file management tools that could be used to bypass the server’s own security measures as a means of installing exploits, such as spam bot nodes or other malicious software.
