Why do you create video games?

Ever since video games became a reality in the 1960s, millions of people have joined companies to work in a $100 billion industry. Some people join because they enjoyed playing games and want their ideas to get created. Some join because of the high salaries. Or some join because they just want to. Why did you join it?

I joined because I generated a few great ideas that I want to create.

Initially for the money, and then after the reality check, I stayed because I got better at it and the better I get at something, the more I want to do it.

Maybe it’s just me, but those options seem very restrictive and overly simplistic. Especially because 2 out of those 4 basically read like joke answers.

Unless of course you meant for this to be a joke poll, in which case I’m in it for the mad monies $$$ lik c0me on. What other reason could there ever be??

I’m just in it for the women.

I enjoy the medium as a way to tell a story.

Plus two of them - options 2 and 4 - are basically the same answer.

Plus it’s missing “To make MMORPGs great again”

I simply like programming. It’s fascinating and combined with games, it’s just a total joy to see everything come alive especially with your own ideas. It also combines so many different kinds of creativity and art. Just love it.

Dang. That would be so great. It’s my favourite genre, but I just can’t find one that I like. Maybe that’s good, because I had spent too much time playing an MMO a few years ago.

I’ve always been the creative type–I started out reading and then writing. Listened to music, then made my own.

Seemed natural to move to making games, since I play and enjoy them. Part of it is just the idea of making games, of expressing myself through a game, but part of it is also that there are specific ideas I have for games that I haven’t seen out there at all, so it’s up to me to work on them.

where’s the “because i hate money and like to suffer” option?

I make games because I love games and it is a perfect mix of the technical and the artistic for me. I do it professionally because I am good at it.

I like making games because of the clash of the emotional and technical sides. It’s a heady mix that’s hard to put down.

I just like playing with complex mathematical ideas. Games give me a low consequence framework to mess around with ideas and concepts.

Let’s face it, no one is going to thank me if I blow something up by playing with my ideas in the day job.

This, except as a hobbyist and because I’m mediocre.

'Cause spare time sucks

Because i have a game idea, and saw that the gaming trend seems stable.
Game is an art and art is subjective.
It’s more like selling an artwork.

Can we not call it an “industry” please? Can we call it the “creative hacking scene” or something more cool? Just saying.

Because this guy

I guess as a creative outlet?

I started working on some pure software dev, trying to gain skills that can pay, but unity always pulls me back to game dev.

I can’t not.

Adding it now
