For those who regularly post and those who regularly just read, what is it about this particular forum that keeps bringing you back here?
Boredom.
That and wanting to learn about the miscellaneous stuff that goes with game development.
Some interesting people who share my interests. Though I make games professionally, it is also my passion and hobby. I wish something like this was available when I started out. (Hell, I wish the web was around when I started).
Also, a few years back when I first picked up unity, this and answers is where I learned how to use it. Though I never actually asked any questions, virtually everything I wanted to know had been asked and answered somewhere here. I just never really left, and it still is a great source of help as new features come out.
^this.
Not much of a gamer but more of a technical and arts guy. I live in an area with about 10 people per square mile and love it but need some social interaction. I like the technical discussions and their is alot of folks here with a good sense of humor. There are also many anal retentive folks and sly trolls whom I have no problem engaging to loosen sphincters or buttslamming drooldonkeys trying to pull a passive aggressive fast one. This is the internet after all:)
Mostly to find solutions to bugs and check new stuff. But you guys drag me here in “General” with hot topics!![]()
Your so lucky… where is that area? Any land for sale? Haha… wish to live in such place, even more empty.
In the mountains of Appalachia in North Georgia about 15 miles from Blue Ridge, a ten minute walk from the river they held the 96 Olympics kayak and canoe races and one of the top trout fishing rivers in the US. I am surrounded on 3 sides by the Chattahoochee National Forest. I have lots of deer, turkey flocks of 20+, black bear, raccoons (friendly cusses…I had one come to visit me and I thought it was the neighbors dog at my feet and looked down and there is Rocky Raccoon staring at me like “hey dude…what’s cookin’”) and fox. Deer and turkey can be quite friendly and will come to eat out of your hand if you coax them over time. I live on a 2 acre spring fed lake with about a dozen species of fish on an acre of land. Lots of land for sale with gorgeous cabins of all wood interior that are mostly empty and rented here and there to tourists from all over the world. I pay for rent what would get me a cracked stucco apartment next to crack dealers in Atlanta.
I first started showing up when a business associate suggested I find an online community focused on skills aligned with my own.
Then, kind of this:
During my transition to Unity the forums were pretty helpful. Partly because of the existing info I could find, as most problems aren’t new. Partly because I found I could hone my own skills more by helping other people solve their problems. Though I do less of that these days in favor of higher level discussions.
@ippdev Hehe, sounds beautiful, I swear your a lucky one man. I would probable like to relocate to such place, in USA. But in USA, there is a problem. You see I am a honest person, if I want to relocate from Europe, I have to fill zillions of papers and invest at least 1 million USD and maybe hope for citizenship else I would have a visa. Meanwhile, you guys have a major problem with illegal emigration. This is really fascinating about USA, besides of course true values.
Find an American girl to marry:) I am originally Canadian.
You sir lives in heaven… nowadays I’m pretty much fed up with large cities and plan to die on a place like yours when I’m oldy.
To watch people’s dreams get crunched, slowly. :s
Or smile when I see a rare case where one succeeds.
I also miss the ppl whose used to be frequent forum goers; most of them are gone now.
I think it’s a nice way to keep up with what’s happening in the indie game development scene.
Also, I really love Unity and want to evolve as a developer. I’ve learnt a lot from reading other peoples posts.
Another thing worth mentioning is the community here is just awesome. Very friendly, helpful, funny, knowledgeable etc.
The main reason I participate is due to the community being so great.
I’m just here for the LOLZ. ![]()
Actually, as a publisher I use the forums for support and answering questions but there isn’t a lot of that. I enjoy spending a little time helping others and answering general development questions because, well, that’s part of how I learned so I like to give back.
I also just enjoy the community altogether. The regulars here are fun and I enjoy the banter.
Edit: I should also note that, no matter how much experience I have… I still learn something almost every day just by reading forums in general (Unity and otherwise).
There are piles of good topics here worth reading, and more good ones daily. I like looking on the forums for answers to problems because its a human to human discussion that you need when you’re looking for answers rather than the needlessly technical stuff you might find on wikipedia or when the docs are too vague.
But, honestly I’m mostly here for the lolz and product support as well. I have to physically restrain myself after reading some of the topics, though…
This is how Legend of Dungeon creators Robot Loves Kitty lived while making the game. I could go for this.
to meet people that have the same interests, feel the energy of the community, keep an eye on what’s going on, and date female devs… no, just kidding ![]()
I kind of see it as good place to check the pulse of the game dev industry. Beyond that just the normal stuff: some experienced, intelligent people to talk with. People post about many different things from theory to implementation. Always something interesting.
Out of all the communities I’ve been in, I’d say these peep’s are the easiest to get along with. A real stand up bunch, games dev is hard and it’s nice to chat about it / talk rubbish.
Of course it’d be better if we were all sat in a dev conference room getting drunk whilst getting rowdy about new features, but it’ll have to do.
Also I need something to do whilst baking lights… ![]()
I actually visited another popular game dev forum, once. Guys with no links to their projects talking about spatial hashing, downvoting people who aren’t “qualified” to contribute to the conversation… a real fine bunch.
