Why doesn't Unity allow minimizing?

Has anyone noticed Unity doesn’t allow minimizing? You have to alt-tab (sorry, APPLE tab) around it, or Apple + H

hide

it.

How bizarre.

Sometimes for smaller changes, I’ll use Photoshop on the mac, and leave my code window open on the left monitor, but for when you don’t need to work in photoshop’s fullscreen mode, having Unity behind can be infuriating

That’s all… Just felt like throwing that out there

Unity does minimize (it doesn’t maximize, though, which makes it worse than useless–not sure if that’s just a bug on 10.4 or not). Unity iPhone doesn’t minimize, but that’s because it’s based on Unity 2.1, which also didn’t minimize. Since I Command-H (Apple-H is old-school) + Exposé hotcorner everything, and use minimizing about 0% of the time, I can’t say I’m all that bothered, personally…

That has bugged me for a while too, but I just figured with me being semi-noobish on a Mac that the minimizing thing was a PEBKAC error. Glad to know I’m not the only one slightly irritated by this. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I posted in the iPhone thread, so I figured you knew I meant Unity iPhone

“Expose” “HotCorner” are terms I’m unfamiliar with. My hatred of Macs runs deep.

Yes, and I was explaining why things are the way they are.

Freak. I don’t see how you can use a Mac without using Exposé. In fact I don’t see how you can use computers at all without Exposé. I’m actually kind of serious about that; operating someone’s machine without being able to hot-corner app windows/all windows/desktop as I see fit is terribly inefficient and drags me down big-time.

Minimizing is for the birds. As in, say, Archaeopteryx.

I keep Unity in its own Space, and I always run it maximized. Four-finger swipe up to push it out of the way, open a new Finder window, pick out some stuff to drag, four-finger swipe up again, drop it in to import. Awesome.

(I can’t imagine trying to use Unity and Photoshop in the same Space. That sounds disgusting.)

What I hate is that Unity doesn’t have a Zoom entry in the Window menu. I set a global shortcut of control-command-Z foor Zoom, but I have to hit that little green button in Unity. I reported this a long time ago, but they never added it. :x

They did, actually. Presumably Unity iPhone will get it when it’s merged with Unity. (I have to say I never use it though.)

Zooming is a snap if you have a mouse with a scrollwheel

I have my PC and Mac sharing a keyboard, mice, speakers, and my monitor via a KVM switch. I love this setup. I do all my 3D and Photoshop work on the PC and use a shared folder to get it to the Mac. So simple, I love it.

I prefer my PC/Windows over Mac/OSX in a big way. I’m new to Mac and only bought one to do iPhone dev work. It’s all the little things that frustrate me. Why can I only resize a window from the bottom right corner (in most apps)? I don’t like finder. I hate the dock icons bouncing up and down when they want attention. On and on and on…

Anyways, I’ll love my Mac when I start bringing in some cash with it.

You’ll love it more when you get used to it and learn the various features, and start using the OS the way it’s intended to be used, instead of wanting it to be more like Windows.

OSX is still quote young, in the grand scheme of things.

Things like having Menus at the top of the screen rather than on the window itself, while its very Amiga OS (which I loved), its actually very annoying.

There are certain things the Mac does do that are seemingly obnoxious, for example, I browse to a folder and then use the Search function, it choosed to search the entire machine rather than all the children of that folder… Of course, you can THEN click a button the change that…

However, this isn’t an “OSX Sucks” thread… I was asking why the minimize button isn’t allowed in Unity, but it is in most other apps.

Guess you’re not using Snow Leopard, eh?

I smell… Fanboi…

That’s yourself you’re smelling. I’m no long-time Apple fan. In fact, I had to use Macs in my job for years starting in the late '90s and grew to quite despise them, what with their crashing, no real multitasking, absurd memory management, modal dialogs, no way to get “into” the system, the broken extensions system, etc. Gah.

As a result, I was pretty dismissive of OS X when I heard about it and for several years afterward, until I finally tried 10.3. Then it was like “Whoa…this is what I’ve been missing, it’s nothing much like the old Mac OS at all.” Pretty soon I was adding “In fact it’s way better than Windows”, and got myself a G5. Since I have no particular loyalty to any OS, I have no problem switching quickly to something that works more like the way I want.
