Why doesn't Unity have a Store

I know they have the assets store. Why not make a store where they sell games made with unity?

I think this would be a very good idea. and will inspire more people who play games to make games of their own. When they see stuff that we have made they will think Dam i wanna make that myself.

just want to know what you all think about a store that has games that are just made in unity.

I like this idea!

The ideas is not bad at all.

However…

I think we already have enough people with unrealistic MMO ideas.

Actually, it could have a positive effect in that people would see finished products and want to have them one, so they may lower their scope to get on there. Ahh…well, we can dream I guess…

It is an interesting idea, but since a lot of Unity made games are on platforms which have their own stores it may not be viable, as we would just be linking to them like this:

But with games that are not on those platforms i.e. web or PC, it could be possible, but it’s not a question of hosting our own game store, it’s more a question of can we be a publisher? But then would that defeat the point of an indie game? There are a tonne of finer points to consider than just, set up shop…done.

I think keeping a mostly “hands off” approach would work, while still allowing indies to remain “indie”.

For instance, have a review process, similar to the AppStore, to ensure general quality (no crashing, no viruses, etc.). Then Unity takes 20% to 30% of sales to pay for those reviewers and additional hosting costs, etc.

Its not really an issue of platform. Obviously, if I’m wanting to sell a game on Steam, I’m not sending them my iPhone build. The same would apply here. If I want to sell my game on the Unity Store, I would have to build it accordingly.

Personally, I love the idea. It gives exposure to developers and to Unity. It can be a nice income for the developers and Unity, and it really makes Unity a one-stop-shop.

I support this idea

While it is possible to publish Webplayer builds on Kongregate, the problem is that most Unity games are lost among the one zillion Flash based Tower Defense and other Games out there. At the same time it could be wiser to learn from an already successful model such as kongregate

So, my version of the idea in the OP is this.
A Kongregate like site for unity Web Player builds. Difference being

  1. Quality Control
  2. All games published should be made with Unity

I find it somewhat disheartening that no one has yet mentioned Wooglie - it’s a game portal exclusively for Unity games!

Wooglie is great and if they keep up the good work, they will grow over time but unfortunately I doubt they have anywhere near the financial might a large company such as Unity has to build a widely popular game portal.

I think the premise is being lost here. The suggestion was for a Store, not a free portal like Kong or Wooglie.

As much as I love making games, sorry guys, I can’t do it for free. But I would love to see a Unity store that allowed us to demo and buy Unity powered games.

I think quality really is the key. There are many portals already but I usually avoid them because they are filled with ads or popups. I don’t mind if the games are of low production value, especially if they are free, but the desperate “monetizing” atmosphere is of sites and the games is tiresome.

That’s why I would avoid free games and portals. Those sites have to make money somehow, so you end up with piles of ads. Its basically the low-income ghetto of gaming sites.

Charge money for the games. Keep the riff-raff out.

At most portals, the Game publishers get a portion of the ad revenue. Furthermore if the game is good enough that people are willing to pay for in game items/conveniences, the publishers get a portion of that as well.

Yes. There are lots of people that hate the ads(its each person’s individual preference) but then there are lots of people that do not mind it at all, which is why sites like youtube and kongregate do well

EDIT: Upon further consideration of khanstruct’s point that the thread might be restricted to the discussion of the idea about a store as opposed to a portal, I think he might be right. I guess I have said what I have to say and leave it at that :stuck_out_tongue:

You have clearly never published a game on Kongregate. The amount you receive from the ads is insignificant. Even if you were to pull in hundreds of thousands of players a month, you might be able to buy a nice meal… at a not so nice restaurant.

Not to mention, having such a relaxed environment leads to a every 12 year old with a computer posting their terrain and first-person controller capsule on the site, claiming its their WIP WoW-killer. No thanks.

If Unity is going to do it, then do it right.

If you want to post your free game, put a link to your dropbox folder in the Showcase forum.

A digital storefront is not a publisher just as the App Store in my iPhone does not make Apple a publisher nor Wal-Mart for shelves game boxes.

A huge beauty of Unity is that its insanely easy to port from mobile to desktop, since the desktop engine is already a pre-requisite to own the mobile platforms. Only few games that heavily rely in gestures would not work nicely on a computer, but I’m sure devs would be able to come up with alternate control schemes for many of those cases.

A Unity Game Store would be an amazing thing… not only can you provide video previews, if the player is interested you can even embed web player demos in the storefront itself, where players can playtest games without installing anything!

There is little need for something like it in the Mac thanks to the new App Store, but I’m sure few will be upgrading to Windows 8. Win7 may be with us for as many years as XP was, and Steam is too picky for indies, getting there is like playing the lottery.

I released my main game (so far) only for Mac, iOS and Android because getting into any digital outlet with any visibility proved to be out of my reach.

I would LOVE to see something like this!

I agree with you on that and also about the 12 year olds posting terrains. I have seen that on kongregate. Thats why I said Quality Control. Anyway, as you rightly said, the OP probably wants the discussion to be about a store and not a portal. So you guys, carry on

We do also have to consider the backend commitment to this. UT would have to completely overhaul their website, setup the financial framework (which I’m sure they could utilize the systems they already have), setup the legal mumbo-jumbo (which, however, would be the same as their existing legal mumbo-jumbo for Unity itself and the Asset Store), design the layout, filtering, submission process, etc. and prepare for a massive increase in storage and bandwidth usage.

They technically have all the tools to do this, thanks to the Asset Store, but it would still require quite a bit of work.

If they were to do this (do it!!!) it wouldn’t be for quite some time.

I’d be behind something like this, myself.

Better still, make it a paid membership - again, keep the rifraff out. $20 USD a year to be able to submit your games and keep the storefront afloat. That’s pocket change that someone like me who’s serious about making games will gladly pay.

Tech demos, terrains, and whatnot belong either on personal blogs or DropBox - I certainly agree with that!

I agree. I happily pay $99 a year for the Apple License to build games on the App Store. Unity has a significantly smaller reach, so I think $20 would be perfect.
