Unity just had their most important conference for a while, a good chance to tell the community what’s happening.
So what is the logic of making videos from Unite unlisted? To make sure as few people as possible see them?
Roadmap video - unlisted. This is probably the most important one, good luck trying to find it.
URP video - unlisted. 47 views in 2 days. Wow, great job everyone.
They have done this before and it really annoying, eventually you’ll never be able to find them again. The only reason I can think of is some social media executive doesn’t want to spam the Unity YouTube with lots of videos at once. If that’s the reason that really is pathetic, but I’d like to know for sure.
Luckily that’s not the case here, they are sharing the links on the forums and even during live stream. I suspect the default setting is unlisted for them and they just simply forget, don’t know. I even had to [warn them]( https://discussions.unity.com/t/929894 page-2#post-9498028) that their planned live stream was unlisted.
That IS strange. I got a notification yesterday and a new Unity video and now I cant even find it… Is it THAT bad after what they did to the community with the attempted run time fee stuff? They decide to pepper videos here and there
Hi - it is true that several of our Unite session videos are currently unlisted.
The primary reason - there is a sizable team internally working on making sure the quality of each video is good enough for us to share with you all properly. Unfortunately there were some technical issues in a couple of our sessions that we’re trying to address, and doubly unfortunately, the roadmap session was one hit by this problem.
The roadmap video we have currently posted on YouTube has some glitches where visuals and audios don’t align. As it was deemed to not be up to par on our standards, and we didn’t want to have people confused if a speaker was saying A, but the visuals were showing B, we decided to unlist it while we work at rectifying the issues.
The good news - we’re almost done. The bad news - we have one section that’s being a little feisty and needing a bit more love, but there are people working on it.
Note - there is nothing wrong in the session in terms of what was presented, etc - we’re actually quite proud of it. It’s just that misalignment of visuals and audio that is causing us to delay a public outing of it a little.
The secondary reason for why some videos might be unlisted - someone mentioned this above, but sometimes we will use a video to help bring more people into the Unity family (or in marketing speak - to gather contact information about potential new users). We may publish direct links to these videos in communications, but (at least initially) those sessions will be unlisted and only available if you fill out a form, or get communication that has a direct link.
We’re conscious that this also does mean that great content sometimes doesn’t get surfaced in search results, etc, but it’s a bit of a balancing act there and we try to minimize impact on access to only a select few.
There were dozens of sessions recorded at Unite last week, and we’re committed to providing an extensive number of them to everyone. We do have a timeline for when videos will be released so it doesn’t overwhelm with an all-at-once dump.
I encourage you to keep an eye on the Unity 2023 playlist for more as they are added:
Thanks for the reply. This is kind of what I feared was one of reasons.
I personally dislike this type of marketing. I think to the kind of people Unity are targeting, it probably feels very corporate and unappealing, especially when there is a ton of Godot content being pumped out which isn’t held to random for your contact information etc. I would really suggest releasing all videos publicly asap for the benefit of professional users, and then find some other content, maybe aimed at beginners to use in those marketing campaigns.
I’m afraid I’m going to bump my own thread because I’m still not happy with the situation.
Unite was 2 weeks ago and the only video released is the roadmap.
But I did get an email inviting me to watch an unlisted video about how Time Ghost was made. Quite a good video, but if I’d missed the email I would have never known it existed. Now I want to watch the video again, can’t search on YouTube, so I search my email. Click the link, first couple of tries it tells me the video is private (wtf). Try a few more time and it loads. Only 2400 views. Top comment is “Why hidden?”
Meanwhile all the content from Unreal fest 3 days ago is freely available. Can you re-think this please?
Maybe a cache thing, but the video you’re talking about is publicly available as of 10 minutes ago according to Youtube, this is from Unity’s page on Youtube
While you posted this 6 minutes ago, according to Discussions
