So, I don’t fully understand why Unity has to re-import everything when switchings platforms. Why does it do that, and why so long for video’s? Video’s take up like 80% of that process and it only uses 38-40% of my CPU, and my drive is mainly sitting idle for that time while Unity takes more RAM. Why is that, I would like to know.
From my understanding it is due to the fact that each platform requires different formats for code, art, ect. For example you might build a .exe file for a windows build but andriod requires a .apk. Due to the different formats Unity has to reimport and edit them into the proper formats before being used and packaged into a platform specific file.
Not an expert so maybe something else is going on too, but thats my best guess.
As said above, different requirements for each platform. You can speed up the process by using a local cache server. (Preferences > Cache Server)
Okay, that makes sense.
Do you know of any good tutorials for this and how a cache server works?
Just turn it on (select Local). It will save your cache when switching. It will still need to import the first time you switch, and import any new assets, but that is really all there is to it.
if you are working as a team, the local cache server greatly speeds up this process, but the main reason why is that each platform has different requirements for texture compression and model format.
Thanks for the help and information. ![]()
