Why is "Sprite Texture" greyed out for my material?

I created a new material with the “Sprites/Default” shader and I can’t selected the “sprite texture” option to select the texture to use. What’s going on?


I am still searching for some proper solution.

Hello, in Unity2D this works via the Sprite Renderer Component.

You must assign the sprite texture and the desired material to this component.

Just simply drag and drop the desired texture into the Scene View to get this setup automatically.
