I’ve owned Unity 5 pro for a couple of years. Now its moving to subscription model I have the offer of $75 per month from next March. That is too much for me, but why is there no discounted offer for a Plus subscription as well ? maybe I could justify that (or maybe there is and I’ve just missed it?)
There are none that I’m aware of. 35 a month is pretty cheap.
Probably does not exist because the Plus price is a big discount itself already compared to old and new pro unless you used all pro services fully
I was wondering about this as well.
I had a Pro subscription for over two years (meaning that I was paying month-to-month and well beyond the 12 month minimum commitment).
When they first announced the new Plus tier, I sent an email to the sales rep (for my region), telling her that I wanted to switch to Plus. She told me I had to wait for an official email that would contain options for migrating my subscription.
5 months later, I got that email but it only offered an option to stay on Pro for a discount.
I emailed her again asking for clarification because I wanted to switch to Plus. She responded telling me to just cancel my Pro subscription manually and sign up for Plus manually.
I replied to point out that by not telling me that originally, she caused me to keep paying for Pro for 4 months longer than necessary (there was a month delay between when the new subscriptions were announced and when they were available for purchase). She did not respond.
When I was signing up for Plus, I saw that if I paid for a year in advance, I would get a small discount. So I opted for that.
I’ve since heard that Unity has been sending email offers of a discount for Unity Plus to some people who have been using the free version of Unity.
So people who have been using the free version get a discount on Plus but people who have been paying for Pro do not.
Seems unfair, but that’s life.
I’ve had other customer service issues with Unity but, at the end of the day, I’m happy with them and I’m happy to continue to support them.
So free users get discount but we don’t. That really sucks.
And honestly I don’t see a reason why we shouldn’t get the same discount on Plus, after all the discount is there to say "Yeah we know we screwed you over but here’s a little something for your loyalty. Shouldn’t matter on the price.
Well I personally have never heard any company giving discounts when a user drops to a lower tier even during bigger transitions. Free users of course get a discount since they would be a new customer (note that even that promotion was for select users only). You are offered a discount on the Pro subscription or you can freely change to Plus which is already a lower cost option even compared to perpetual upgrade path.
Note: I’m also a perpetual license user since Unity 3.
I’ve been a pro user for many years but I don’t think they should give a discount. it’s about the same price I would have paid for the upgrade which is fair enough.
Overall their pricing system is generous and I appreciate their generosity.
It’s like that across the business world. New customers are typically seen as more valuable then old ones. It’s not like you are going anywhere. In fact many existing customers are invested enough in Unity that they can’t go elsewhere.
If you really want an effective protest, switch engines and encourage others around you to do the same. Make sure your local sales rep knows it’s a pricing issue.
Otherwise it’s a case of sucking it up and dealing. Unity will always be offering discounts to try and convert free users to plus or pro.
Did I miss something? What discount there is? Other than the one that got sent last month to selected users?
My issue is not that I was not offered a discount.
My issue is that I was given bad info from a Unity sales rep, which ended up costing me a little bit of money.
Last month, when I was signing up for a Plus subscription, there was a discount offered if I paid for a year up front.
I didn’t remember the amount so I just looked it up: It’s $25 off if you prepay for the year.
It’s actually more convenient for me to pay up front so it was an easy choice for me.
I’d contact a different sales rep, or support, or @aliceingameland . If there was a misunderstanding then I’m sure someone will be willing to help.
I’ve gotten a few random special offers encouraging me to subscribe at a discount rate. I think the last one was after I got certified.
It’s not enough money to justify further aggravation.
I got bad info. They probably didn’t have the migration options figured out at the time she told me to wait. It wasn’t on purpose.
An apology would have been nice, but I understand why one is not forthcoming. ![]()
That’s good to know. Last time I checked, they didn’t have any certification sessions scheduled for my area (Toronto). I was thinking I might attend Unite next year so I could take the test.
Locally our sales rep has indicated that they are in the process of farming out the certification to other education providers. So you may not need to get it directly via Unity in future.
Of course, given your history with sales reps I’ll understand if you are sceptical. ![]()
I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a less than stellar experience recently @schmosef . Consider this an apology for any confusion or misinformation you may have received – like you say, I’m sure it was not on purpose but it’s unfortunate none the less. Thanks to everyone here for being reasonable and understanding in their feedback as well – it’s great for us to hear the ways we can improve and it’s always super appreciated when that’s conveyed in a civil manner. <3
I have been a pro user for years, had a pro subscription for 2 years in a row, and was offered the Plus at a discounted price when my Pro subscription was coming to an end. Not sure why you were left out ![]()
Also, if you had a Pro subscription and 4 months to go, you can’t just cut it short or switch to a cheaper subscription. You would have had to wait it out, since it was a 12 month subscription in the first place.
