Personally I think that they need to fire whoever in marketing decided to call it the WII U and the 3ds. Both are confusing names that really hurts selling to the casual crowd that doesn’t follow the industry. My mother in law thought that the 3ds was a ds with a 3d screen and nothing else. My mother thought that the WII U was a controller and was confused why we needed to bring the whole system during Xmas to use it when she has a WII already.
The WiiU will still remain unique, as Sony is going for a touchpad on there controller (like the back of a PS Vita)
The 3DS did good with it’s commercials, as acual gamers/teens would know the difference between a 3DS and a DS.
The WiiU commercials are a bit confusing, I knew what it was but most of my friends thought it was just a addon to the Wii.
I just think they need to fix that then they’ll be fine.
The reason its failing at the moment is because there are no games. Also, it didn’t help that Rayman Legends was put on hold just so it could go multiplatform. All the people working on it were rushed and worked extra hours… just so it could be shelved for a couple of month. I can’t imagine how I would feel in their situation. A lot of people were waiting for that game to buy a Wii-u.
Anyways, I think the situation is much like that of the 3DS when it came out. When they put out more games, people will buy it more. Wait until they show the new Mario and Zelda and all that will change. Nintendo titles are mostly what make their console sell.
From what I understand it may be selling less than the wii but it’s still selling better than the 360 and the ps3 were when they were at this stage of their lifetime. You have to remember the wii sold like crazy! It’s not strange the wii u isn’t selling as well.
Also I wouldn’t worry about Sony making a tablet controller. It will be the same situation as the ps move. It probably won’t come with the console, therefore only a small percentage of ps4 owners will buy it thus making it not a very viable thing to develop for.
Seems pretty clear its a combination of things, the Wii U name is proving confusing in that users think its an add on not an entirely new system, lack of games, lack of system seller games etc. On a personnel note I just don’t think the Wii U has any unique selling point that will draw in the masses like the Wii did. I’m unconvinced about its controller for example and it seems Nintendo have failed to ignite much interest in it either, yet.
Sadly things are just going to keep getting worse for it, once MS and Sony get their next gen consoles out, as it will have to do more to be seen in the crowd.
Obviously with its first party games keeping fans of Nintendo happy it will continue to sell, but I would guess its going to be closer to N64 numbers rather than Wii, though ultimately I’d be surprised if the Wii U became an absolute failure, its core support should ensure it is a financial success, if not a mass-market one.
Well my huge concern is that if Nintendo is forced out of the hardware game it will cause stagnation in creativity.
I mean even the most hardened of fan boys have to admit that everyone almost always copies what Nintendo does with controllers.
NES - Dpad and Menu buttons
SNES - Shoulder Buttons
N64 - Analog and rumble
Gamecube - RF Wireless controllers
Wii - Motion control
Wii U - Touch screen
Every single time Nintendo make a console they introduce a new concept to the market that then becomes standard. They are actually attempting to evolve. All that Sony and MS does is make a powerhouse system and create new ways to charge their customers. Oh, and also if specs leaks are accurate the two systems have nearly identical hardware.
I kept looking at the Wii U every time I went to Best Buy, but didn’t see any of the games I wanted to play. Where’s the “Launch Title”? I don’t understand how this was not delivered…
I love to watch Nintendo fanboys blow a gasket in these threads.
Not_Sure, you also forget that Sony and MS were the ones to introduce online, multiplayer gaming, while Nintendo insisted that “no one would EVER want to play a game with someone not in the same room as them!”
You can pretend that Nintendo is benevolent and Sony and MS are just evil corporate empires, but the fact is, they all contribute to the industry. Yes, Nintendo does tend to take greater risks, but that is also terrible business management. They forge a gimmick, announce it long before they should and release before their competitors. Their design then gets copied and outdone.
The end result? Nintendo chokes trying to be the first to the gate while MS and Sony continue to provide hundreds of games to the market. So who’s trying to suck up all your money, and who will continue to provide you with service and entertainment?
Oddly enough I might have bought one if the had a Temple run 3 on the Wii. Simple Fun. I looked at NSMB and I just didn’t feel it. I wanted to play Bayonetta 2 and oddly enough Rayman Legends but both, while advertised, were not available yet and still are not available.
