I was just wondering if Unity is going to support the Wii U and if they will to what extend. Personally I’m a bit skeptical towards the Wii U but nevertheless it’s the first new console coming out. Any inside news anyone?
Likely there will be support in some form. Nintendos past track was to upgrade what they had so the Wii version should be able to get over rather fast.
Question is much more of who is going to want to go for a TV console that tries to fight with ‘mobile weapons’ against mobiles while not being mobile … I don’t think its going to stand the slightest chance to even survive its 3-4yr lifecycle.
People will instead use Apple TV + iPad or even iPad + iOS mobiles linked through (RealRacing HD2 + RealRacing 2 show that concept with the ipad acting as a ‘console’) and similar systems out of my view especially as nintendo does not intend to have more than one of those pseudo ipads linked per Wii U according their own statements.
It’s what troubles me as well the bizar design of the controller, there is offcourse the Wii U pro controller link But I think that it lacks the graphical firepower to compete with other alternatives. I think the only thing they can compete with is the price or they should provide beautiful development tools. But in the past with the NDEV and the SDK it was not as up to spec as for instance the dev station and software for the XBOX360.
I think it’s can be safely assumed that Wii U support will eventually come and it will be along the lines of XBox, PS3 and Wii support.
This means restrictive NDA licensing on a per-project basis for a LOT of money that requires you to already have a manufacturer development program and SDK in place.
Being Full HD will not safe the next generation any longer or even help it in any form. Its an expected standard after all, even my ipad3 can do it and my PS3 has full hd + 12bit color output against my sony gaming TV. Thats a level where nintendo won’t be for another generation beyond the Wii U.
Also just cause Nintendo will support Full HD, that does not mean that its graphically capable to offer anything realistic (look at 3DS - one would have expected to see a real gpu, not something outdated by 1-2 years on release date when looking at android and iOS) standing a 5 year lifecycle. Nintendo didn’t have a single device being graphically a year ahead of casual computer technology. The fact that its new controller likely costs $100+ already basically doesn’t give it much hope to be really graphically advanced as nintendo won’t sell it at $500+ and at $300 it wouldn’t be much more than the ipad2 → ipad3 hw upgrade which is not cutting it at all as the Wii was years behind tech at release already (its an overclocked gamecube cpu with a slightly more capable but still seriously outdated gpu to make transition trivial for devs), this is due to nintendo always selling their consoles with a margin, they never took a lose to push to a larger userbase like MS and Sony did, thats why they always lose out after 2 - 3 years into the lifecycle at latest when the investment from MS and Sony finally play out due to hardware progression.
Nintendo has finally to fix their online strategie. their store sucks absolutely, takes ages to load nothing (even a shit 128mb android device gets to the google play store 10 times faster and navigates it in second fractions not minutes)
As it stands, nintendo did the ‘shy defensive guy’ strategy with overprotective user unfriendly decisions (no we don’t add DVD support cause we don’t want to pay a few dollar per device, screw you users or ‘why would we want a proper social - friends list, we have random matchmaking and enter the freaking friends key systems’ ) for too long and if the Wii U isn’t going to turn that around on day 0 already (the 3ds took month to get its store, thats not acceptable even less with the unrealistic prices set for the mid quality titles there that often are worse than XBLIG titles at $15 and alike), the Wii and 3DS will be the last generation of Nintendo devices that will find enough foothold to get serious 3rd party support, if at all.
If you are in for the money on casual, go for mobile, if you are in for it for serious graphical titles and serious users, go for the playstation and xbox.
Nice fanboyism there Dreamora, saying stuff about a system that isent out yet and about information that we don’t know yet.
On topic yes Unity will most likely have Wii-U (might already for all we know) but i think that there will be multiple versions one in the same manner as the other consoles licenses are deltwith and one for the webstore that will be like IOS and Android licenses.
This thread may be a good place to post this:
Seems Microsoft may steal some of the Wii U thunder. If I get it right, they are working on a software update for the current XBox that will allow developers to use external iOS devices in a fashion very similar to the WiiU ipad-like controller.
This would beat the WiiU to the market, I bet likely will also extend to Android and WinPhone 7 and result in a near instant install base of about everyone with a smartphone, tablet or iPod touch.
Don’t get me wrong: Mario alone is enough for ME to get a Wii U, but it is strting to sound Nintendo is being easily over-hyped.
Woah Woah Woah! No need to pull cards…by your past posts I can also tell that you really, really, really, like Nintendo.
And he’s mostly right. They need to fix online, and they need some cereal 3rd party support. It’ll probably be so complicated anyway with licensing and all I doubt many Indies will touch it.
The rise and the fall of Nintendo… Coming soon…
You just got to laugh at this thread, and anyone who thinks a 120 year old company with some of the most iconic IP in the business is just to going to throw in the cards (pun intended) after one bad year.
Why is it that every single thread asking whether or not a certain system will be supported turns into people saying that the system is bad?
sigh
I didn’t know there were fanboys in developer forums.
Much as I would like to think Unity could work their magic to allow for building to the new system, its also been announced that the Wii U won’t support UDK. I don’t know if this is a technical issue or what the deal is, but if the UDK guys can’t find a workaround, I don’t hold out much hope for others to do the same.
That would be good but i think they will twist it into some crap with only WP7 and sence most people dont have those phones it will be a not so good feature.
Yes I am, if you look into the Wii-U you will find that that is one of the things Nintendo has said they want to fix.
Oh and this is likely to be Nintendo Network wich is also for 3DS.
What…? How does this even relate?
Yes, I’d imagine they will support it in time, personally.
I’ll honestly love the new Nintendo console if itdoes 480p for handelds or 720p or 1080p for screens. I generally agree with you Dreamorea, but I think it might be able to hit a niché market once more.
Admittedly, I am a bit confused as to a stragetgy that involves pushing out consoles with a postive margin…
I own every Nintendo Device back till NES and the Original GameBoy up to Wii and the 3DS.
We have a lot of information about the Wii U actually (unlike Xbox and PS successors) and we have 30 years of experience of how Nintendo builds their hardware, prices it and sets the margin (the Wii was a prime example of this with the stuff sold at a margin where even Apple pales, which is hard to accept any longer if they have a 70%+ margin on the Wii and then do the regular controller overpricing which is normally meant to pay back the lack of margin of the console itself). They were the gaming counterpart to Apple for most of this time (aside of the epic failure on the N64 with their overpriced catridges instead of CDs when they broke with Sony and basically gave them an incentive to create their own console) but in the past 8 years they have struggled more and more in the serious gamer market so the Wii was targeted completely against them and towards casual which back then was a great idea.
But in todays environment with mobiles that easily have a significantly better graphic quality than the Wii and potentially even Wii U, their strategy will no longer work out (and the significant lose in stock since the first Wii U press informations back up that fact - Nintendo has hit an alltime low this year with a 2 figure percentage lose on top of the Yen - USD caused loses already - I think it was also the first time they posted a lose and not a win).
Their ‘new cool thing’ with the Wii U is also in no way new.
On the GameCube there was a special cable for GameCube + GBA - I still own the cables and GBA + the single only game who ever used it.
On the Wii there was the same with the DS.
and guess what: despite the massive market share of both these handhelds the concept NEVER worked out and likely never will as no casual can check 2 screens in parallel.
That the new approach allows to play the game only on the device does not help it the slightest bit cause thats what mobiles do already and what the PSVita does in a 10 times better quality at a lower price than the Wii U (nintendo isn’t gonna sell it at less than $349 if not $399) and hey, it even can share PS Minis etc with the PS3 which many people have as cheap, high end BlueRay Player in their living rooms anyway.
So I’m just a long standing Nintendo user who is forced to admit that Nintendo is the ‘RIM’ of the console market, oversleeping the major change in the casual market for years and not invest enough to diversify themself appropriately against mobiles and not even the major hit they’ve taken from the 3DS launch has woken them up yet it seems.
The only chance the Wii U really has a chance to become a compelling device that works out in their favor out of my view is:
-
Total overhaul on their anti social brain dead approach to friend lists and people connecting with each other - This finally seems to be on their radar so hopefully resolved but to what degree it really works will have to be seen. I recall their claims and promo back in Wii and DS days and we all know how it worked out.
-
Total revamp of the store and making it blazing fast - waiting about 5 minutes to check out a single lowquality download titles description (from start of store till I reach it) is not acceptable in any form and having such titles offered at $15+ is definitely a reason for me to open the store more than 4 times a year at max cause I don’t pay that much for the quality of titles offered up there.
-
Get something really strong on the plate, not focusing on that controller gimmick for ‘novelity’ cause my iPad3 stomps over it, my iPad2 does so too I guess and if the iPad1 will do is a thing I will see when I get it. This might have been partially resolved but I do not trust them that they really go all in for normal controllers again due to the factor casual friendliness and their dependency on it.
-
Cut their margins so its priced realistically for what it will offer (we don’t know for sure what it will be but we can be pretty sure its nothing thats gonna extend the reach of the PS3 significantly graphic power wise as Nintendo unlikely planned the console with ‘release day loses’ or $600+ price tag - I would expect something around the generation DX10 or first DX11 gpu generation and a cpu in the range of the X360 as that would be the next natural step in the cpu evolution of nintendo consoles with its G5 PPC Gecko processor). Some analyst claim that it has to hit in the $200 range to stand a chance and given the things we have seen vs X360 / PS3 that might very well be the truth at latest some months into its existence when the controllers novelity wears off (likely faster than last time due to the massive tablet userbase)
But to return to the topic: I would expect that Wii U support should be rather soon to be seen.
Nintendo has a long history of hardware evolution, they never decided to go with revolutions and breaking hardware changes that would force their developers to reinvent the wheel
I’d usually just roll my eyes and move on, but… I thought you said you kept up with the information, dreamora? Your last post is both making a lot of unconfirmed speculation (or relying on unconfirmed rumours), and isn’t up to date with Nintendo’s latest announcements (or even ones they made months before).
And that is all I have to say about that.
I have a deep respect for Nintendo, as they single-handedly resurrected the video game industry (after the Atari… E.T. fiasco). However, people tend to forget that Nintendo is (and always has been) a toy company, not a video game company.
Everything they have ever made was a “gimmick” of sorts. Even the original NES and Gameboy were gimmicks at the time. Some of these have worked out (like the NES) and some have pioneered technologies (motion control in consoles).
Keep in mind that when Sony was first introducing the modem on the Playstation, Nintendo came out to say “We’ll never support online gaming in our systems. No one wants to play a game with someone halfway across the world. They want to play with the person sitting next to them.”
P.S. They didn’t “break with Sony”, they actually stabbed them in the back. They negotiated a partnership, then Sony announced it and, that same day, Nintendo announced that they were partnering with Philips instead (which actually fell apart). This made Sony look bad, but they decided to move forward with their design anyway, creating the Playstation. Nintendo then tried to sue Sony for developing the Playstation! It was all very shifty and under-handed.
They’re over 100 years old, of course they didn’t start out making video games. But they are more of a game company than Sony or Microsoft (or Apple). And while I’m not exactly a Nintendo fanboy, I recognize what they’ve done for the industry and don’t want to see them fail. Bad enough when Sega threw in the towel.
Most of these gimmicks were innovative enough to be copied by the rest of the industry and made standard on future consoles. As silly as I think the Wii-U controller is, it’s already being copied by Microsoft.
Who stabbed who? Nintendo backed out of the contract when they realized it gave Sony control over licensing, manufacturing, and a large share of the revenue. Can’t really blame them for backing out.
