I look to the year ahead and really want to get into something new (cutting edge). Most likely it will be VR related but having a project in mind and a DK2 I find one thing holding me back. The control scheme!
I know there are plenty of avenues being explored with Oculus buying carbon design and nimbleVR and also the Sixense Stem looks promising. Will we get that much needed breakthrough?
I realize for a few subsets of game types current controls are adequate (mainly FPS and cockpit fighter games). The technology holds a lot of promise but using a mouse/keyboard or controller breaks immersion greatly for most games.
I realize the big breakthrough would be interaction based (i.e. grabbing things and hand simulation) and hopefully someone tackles this problem in a significant way.
There are also some game types (mine included) that don’t even need a full solution but would be fine with a dual stick controller fused with accelerometer/gyro (like dual shock 4). When looking for products it surprises me that there isn’t a PC controller that currently has this. Perhaps not much value is in that baby step when it would only be an intermediate step to a full solution. Hopefully one of the technologies whether it is magnets, motion cameras, or gyros (or a combination) can transform the VR controls.
Do you think we’ll get a large breakthrough this year?
