I have a website (http://www.3deality.com) that shows just regular HTML content when people visit it that don’t have the Unity webplayer installed.
But when they do have it, the Unity web player is layed out on top of the original content.
I know from previous experience that the google bot does not like you having any hidden content and will give you a penalty for it. I dont expect the Google bot to have Unity installed, but it is not easily fooled either and before you know it your website is displayed at the very bottom of the search results.
Does anyone have experience with this?
I’m meeting something similar with AdSense: Google won’t accept my request to subscribe a site without some HTML content… so I added it.
About ranking I don’t know yet.
After several days Google still had not indexed a single page from the sitemap I provided. and my website was nowhere to be found in the search results.
So I decided to make a new homepage. Only HTML, no Unity and show a button with the option to view the website in the 3D environment inside Unity (as originally intended). The button links to the original homepage that now has the meta tag “NOINDEX”. I uploaded a new sitemap and within 5 minutes the first page from the sitemap was indexed.
It’s pretty sad though. I want to create 3D websites, but I can’t have a 3D homepage.
And only because Google dictates me to use HTML only and not place the webplayer on top of it for the select group of users that have Unity installed. It’s understandable, but also a pity.
