Will water ever get better...

I fond the water in unity basic very poor, and I’m wondering if they will ever update it… Does anyone know

Thanks

That’s what the asset store is for. Plenty of water options there so Unity can focus on the more important things that can’t be improved by the community.

That’s right!

Yes buy tons of stuff on top of the $1500.00 asking price per person for Unity… let’s never ask Unity to improve because it’s all on the asset store…

Or we could request it and see what happens so it makes life easier for the developers? Maybe?

Unity is free. This topic isn’t about Unity Pro. In any case the water is an external asset, it’s not built into the engine. Sure they could improve it, and probably they will sometime, but it’s not like you’re stuck with it. If you don’t want to buy a water asset, there are other free ones out there that I’ve seen, and you can always make your own.

Then I need to go to bed it seems, I have made my own (Well kinda) and I’m going to release it for free ;)…

Well yes you could request it. However realtime reflections and image effects are both Unity Pro, and those things are used to make realistic water.
But Unity is working on new Standard Assets if you have not already heard. And we could suggest it to them to make the water better. However there are many things on Unity Tech’s to do list; I’m sure we would all love new GUI over better water. Anyway they have priorities, and better water for Unity Free is probably not very high on their list, you know?

I thought it was about Unity pro, my bad! Apologies.

Really:O:smile: I can’t wait:smile: Please keep me informed when it comes out:)

Can we keep thread titles on topic, thanks.

It’s not Unity’s job to give you better water, Unity is a tool of creation, so you should want better tools so you can make water the way you want.

The real questions is… will Unity have built in shader editor, so more people are able to get some water shaders working?

Or maybe, will Unity come with a voxel fluid editor thing out the box some day?

In the meantime… Asset Store is a great answer. I know if you already bought pro, keep spending money is a drag… but it’s a good thing to have it available, and ideally you’d be getting your money back if you’re making a commercial game.

The old thread title sure was misleading

Whilst I see your point I don’t completely agree, reliance on the asset store is never a good thing. Also it can take a fair while to modify anything and everything, water is just one thing in a larger scheme of things. I think it’s really cool that you can nearly do whatever you want with Unity and it rarely keels over, definite advantage for tweaking and yes it’s better than starting from scratch with a self built engine.

It’s one of those things, it doesn’t harm anyone to have better water and whilst it’s probably bottom of the pile for Unity. It shouldn’t mean we don’t request it.
