One most important feature that Unity lacks and has been lacking for years now is a proper Spline Editor. I’ve just seen this preview of the new Environment System. The thing that caught my eye is the non-destructive layer system:
The question: Will we get a proper Spline Editor in order to create non-destructive paths, roads and rivers on a layer that can be moved around? The video of the presentation was quite impressive in how fluent it was. However splines are an integral component of every landscape. It would be super awesome if those finally got added, especially with that new non-destructive layer system
In addition to edit the terrain using spline, another amazing complement using spline is to place details and assets. There’s a tool on asset store called Mega Scatter with this idea. Which is amazing! What do you think Unity gurus?
That’s nothing original and rather straightforward once you start implementing such kind of tool. I added it as well in mine . Only thing that’s left is for Unity to release their splines in order for everyone to be able to stick to standards.
Once that’s done, the ideas will just come flooding in. Like multi-lane splines or having Poisson distribution along the spline, even physics along it. But for that the precondition, i. e. spline availability has to be met. Can’t wait for this, it’s the one thing I’m really looking forward to. Plus the Environment System.
However unless Unity discloses a timeframe, everything you do could be a huge waste of time if you start working a week (it’s rather trivial to do) and the next day Unity announces theirs.
@Rowlan Thanks, sounds great but I hope it’s not postponed to 2022 or something! If they could just give us a more precise date then we could plan on integrating it in our projects/products.
