Hi, I’m going to buy a desktop pc cause my laptop ain’t that good for all the game dev programs (3ds max, photoshop etc).
So I was checking out an Alienware pc. And I liked the specs of it. But I must choose between w7 and w8. The price is the same, so that won’t matter. I have never tried out w8, so don’t know how it is. I don’t really know what to choose…
Why not both?

Get Windows 8 if you can spend five dollars more on Start8. Other than the new start screen, which is wonderful on a tablet but a total productivity killer on a desktop for me, Windows 8 is better than Windows 7 as far as I’m concerned.
Windows 8 + Classic Shell > Windows 7, especially for gamedev. Keep in mind that you will be discovering new windows 8 features for about 2 weeks. The changes to ‘search’ alone are worth the upgrade for gamedev.
The real problem is the alienware PC. You could easily find something better for cheaper.

In general Win 8 is better than Win 7, but when i worked with Unity in Win 8 Unity always need Microsoft Win 8 64Bit patch, and gave me link to download, but i found patch for Win 7 ONLY !!! I’m thinking return to Win 7 again
I’m using win8 64 bit and have no issues on unity (except 1 DX11 issue i already had in win7)
I’m using windows 8 with unity and maya etc. and as long as you install a start button to disable all the metro crap it works great.
I too would have said an Alienware PC is over priced for what it is, until it breaks. My daughter has an Alienware laptop and I have a MSI laptop with higher specs for the same price, however, her keyboard died after just a month of use, but instead of having to send it back, Dell sent out a repair guy to our house to fix it. If mine ever had problems I would have to send it back and be without for a few weeks. In the future I think I will go Alienware/Dell just for that service.

Go with 8. The desktop experience is virtually the same as 7 (with the exception of the Start Screen, which I eventually came to love. Your milage may vary), it runs noticably faster, and it opens up the potential market of the Windows Store to you.

I used to hate Windows 8, then I got Start8 and now I love it.
Go for Windows 8.
Just make sure to learn all the keyboard shortcuts then you’ll love it.
