Maybe I’m the only one who thinks this, but does anyone else feel like its really not that impressive for all the hype its getting? On every news site they talk about how amazing the OS is but this hands on video doesn’t really do it for me. (Not to mention it looks glitchy instead of smooth like the iPhone)
Video:http://gizmodo.com/5472010/windows-phone-7-interface-microsoft-has-out+appled-apple
People scrutinized the iPad for every little missing detail, and now they praise what looks like another poorly built Microsoft product???
Anyway I just wanted to get some other iPhone developers thoughts, and hope I’m not the only one who thinks the ‘amazing’ interface kinda sucks. (They also mention xbox live and access to it, but I don’t see that doing a lot of good for your phone.)
I haven’t seen the videos, but from the photos I saw and the walk-throughs I read, it sounds great. I think the hyperbole comes from the fact that Microsoft found a way to update the overall UX of the device that doesn’t feel like a retread of iPhone, Android, Zune, or older WinMo. It feels new and that’s a nice surprise.
We’ll see what they announce next month for developer tools and marketplace rules, but–assuming there will be tools and a marketplace–it should be good.
It is interesting how the exact same missing things – no Flash and not allowing running multiple apps at once – provoked endless iPad gripes from Engadget/Gizmodo/TechCrunch, whereas Win 7 Phone gets a complete pass from the exact same folks on the same missing features. Maybe they got over it already.
Are you kidding? How many OpenFeint threads are on the front page of the iPhone forum today? Four by my count.
If they can build a userbase (and I can’t imagine they won’t try for years and years), or if the tools are interesting, or hopefully both, I’ll be interested. Sounds like games will be important to the platform, and Microsoft has a reputation for taking care of game developers.
All that said, it’s just an interesting platform with zero users right now. I also hope that Apple’s supposedly “A+” iPhone OS 4.0 update is a total homerun. Wanna bet that 4.0 has a new Springboard design that makes Win 7 Phone look like ass?
Sorry, I meant from the video they show access to xbox live games(not talking about using xbox live in a game on the phone), so that just kinda seemed stupid to me. You can browse all the xbox live downloads, but obviously can’t use them. It will be awesome though if we can put mobile unity games on the xbox live marketplace.
Let’s hope so, but just wait for everyone to gripe at all the “missing” features.
I do agree with you on the fact that it does seem more people complain about the list of missing features on Apple products, especially the iPhone. Whenever another company comes out with a marginally equivalent product users seem to praise the choice features it does have.
Guess it’s one bit of having the best products in the world, to also have customers that expect you to push the market leaps forward at a time. Don’t think many other companies can do what Apple has done in the last 10 years for phones and media in general.
I’m very interested in Win Phone 7 - I’m a big fan of the music subscription model. The Zune HD has a great interface, nice to see it extended to the phone instead of a tired UI clone of the iPhone. Saw a demo video and the beta device had some sluggish moments; assuming/hoping that will be tweaked by release.
I seriously hope 4.0 has new interface features but to tell the truth I’m starting to doubt it. The fact that the iPad looks so close to the iPhone says Apple likes what they have, why would they totally redesign it? But it’s Apple and I have faith that they will still wow and dazzle us with features that makes every other phone again look less cool.
don’t see a reason why apple would have to come up with a new interface for the basic screens. after all they didn’t come up with the idea of an ad banner scroll view, advertising that mess as “their new os”
i think Microsoft will change the mobile platform with it’s revolution. there are advantages in this platform. the platform is not open to any hardvare but is not close to all of them. there are many many more windows developers in our world than apple developers. Microsoft will create developer tools based on VS and .net and it’s native C++ compiler and windows phone 7 series will have 200k applications and games in a year or 2. apple surely will response with something but the history of consoles and personal computers showd that when Microsoft comes to a market … they’ll win.
the story about SEs is different but with new products from microsoft (including windows phone 7 and its bing features) Microsoft will grow much. they have a better developer API and the results are mixed from different type of contents. saying this i use google yet but i think it will change in near future. bing goes from %10 to more than %30 at least. any ways i think MS will get a big share of mobile computing market.
except bing is doing quite well. Ive replaced most of my searches with bing for some time now and find the quality is the same and some of the features preferable.
MP3 players aren’t even really a market anymore. They are all personal media devices. Calling them ‘MP3 players’ is like calling personal computers ‘electronic word processors’.
These markets don’t shift over night. All MS has to do is stay faithful to a product and support its users/developers and over time their share will grow.
Apple needs to be careful too. Their public image isn’t as rock solid as it used to be.
Microsoft didn’t win the console market. Also Zune failed, and mobile Windows is trailing and has been losing share for a while. The only things Microsoft has really succeeded at are desktop Windows and Office.
However, at first look, I’d say Windows Phone 7 is pretty much what they need to turn things around in the mobile space.
the incorrect thing about windows mbile was it’s open platform. as you said windows phone 7 series is the right move in mobile space. i think they’ll do something in portable console space too. Microsoft has a really bi share in consoles and with project natal it will get more and more market and no one will buy Wiis. i really love Wii!
zune is not a bad product and many people bought zune HD. i agree that that market is dominated by Ipods.
hopefully nicholas fransis will share his ideas on the blog soon. please!!
Natal will flop significantly if it happens as it is intend to.
The Wii works because its the core aspect of the platform, each dev is granted to have these capabilities.
Natal is on the same base as sonys Eye Toy: its an addon that users might or might not have and chances for not having is significantly larger. Upon that base, the interest to really bring games to it is not even remotely comparable to the Wii.
And that without the fact that the install base of the wii is larger than the x360s
