Microsoft really needs to make this process easier for developers. Having to fill in US specific tax forms with obscure legal jargon when you don’t even live in the US, having to speak on the phone to Symantec to activate your account and fill in a whole bunch of other crap online is just going to scare developers away.
I consider myself to be fairly intelligent yet I had to resubmit everything online about 3 times because their site is not very clear on what is what and whether your tax forms have even been accepted or not. They need to wake up and smell the coffee.
I would assume Windows 8 store support and phone support will probably be available to publish from Unity around the same time, but yes it is still in internal testing from what I last heard.
Hmm thanks guys.
I was going to leave it till my contract is up next month and get a phone before I looked into getting a developers license but if its that bad then I’ll have a look into it later on tonight.
They have a reputation to keep. Can you imagine the public perception among WinPhone users if every Unity game they try starts having crazy phone crashing bugs?
Wait… why is Symantec involved in this at all??
They have a reputation to keep.
They need to verify your company, your details, your email all that crap. It’s like MS has contracted out Symantecs call centres or something to do all the security checks.
They were giving away 1 year development membership (ie. Windows Store and Windows Phone Store) for free last October. It’s true about Symantec and all but they are trying to avoid the Windows Stores becoming like the online gaming area has turned into: predatory and immature conduits for spam, phishing, and other types like that.
My Windows Phone developer account is expiring this month. I’m trying to decide if I should bother renewing it, or just create a new account once Unity eventually supports it, AND the platform proves more profitable than Windows Phone 7. In 12 months I only made about $400 in app sales (about 10 apps) on the platform (for Windows Phone 7).
And you’ll probably make even less of than that with Windows Phone 8. The Windows Phone brand is pretty much completely devastated at this point and has even less marketshare than Blackberry. The only markets with any real penetration rate are iOS and Android and that’s really not going to turn around any time soon because Microsoft spent too much time on their thumbs with their mobile division.
That’s kind of what I figure too. Was hoping the newer Windows 8 tablets might make things more attractive to consumers, but I’m not really holding my breath.
Yeah… no. Windows 8 tablet sales are positively abysmal. The thing was dead in the water when it tried to enter the market at a price point for its lowest model being higher than the iPad and competing Android tablets. The entire concept is just completely out of touch with consumer behaviour right now and suffered from the same “we forgot to secure an ecosystem” problem that Windows Phone did. It’s depressing just how much Microsoft is bungling their mobile space right now
You totally forgot the outstanding sell figures for the Lumia 920, Marigold.
Yeeeaaahhhh, no.
Representations from sales figures from Amazon are also useless due to the fact that Amazon doesn’t sell iPhones. All sales figures from Nokia include the ENTIRE Lumia line and not just the 920. This is just the Lumia 900 all over again. You know, the phone that was supposed to save Windows Phone 7?
lol
well I read several articles reporting 2,5 millions preorders ?
édit : ok sorry couldn’t read the article, I’m at work
You’re right Marigold in that Surface RT sales have been abysmal something like only a million sales so far. I get the feeling that most people who are interested in getting a surface are waiting on the pro model.
You’re wrong though on WP8 I think however. I also don’t agree with the article you linked. Using Facebook as a basis to judge how a platform is selling? Yeah no. Its definitely not on the levels on Android or iOS but I do see it ending up being a comfortable third.
It will be an interesting fight however between Blackberry and WP8 though to see how the spot for third comes along.
All I know is that I could never ever go back to iOS or Android now that I tasted WP8
I’m in the same boat as Yeti. Contract is due up next month and I’m really being tempted by WP8. Only thing I wonder is does getting that show support for Win 8 as a desktop OS? Really don’t want to be associated with that shit lol.
I wish Nokia had stuck 720p screen in the Lumia 820. Drawn more towards that at the moment as the handset cost for the 920 is a bit out my range just now. So its really between the 820 or 8X.
Read the article again. It’s pointing out that that’s how people have been getting their detail on sales data and how fundamentally flawed that idea is. And they’re not a comfortable third at all. They’re still underperforming the absolutely abysmal sales of Blackberry devices. The simple fact of it is, though, that without those sales being at a comfortably high level, there’s no developer incentive to target these platforms because there’s simply no money there.
