Windows standalone: Game works only in windowed mode

I released my game Clown House on Steam and I have players who can’t get the game work on their Windows machines in fullscreen mode. It happens both in Windows 7 and 8, so not really an OS-specific problem I guess.

Below is one of the players’ log. PlayerPrefs language is ENGLISH really belongs to a script in the game. It makes me think that game really continues without showing visuals, because there is a splash screen scene at first, then comes the scene that prints this language debug log.

Hi,

any idea why the game is trying to run under OpenGL? If you’re forcing it, I’d give it a shot to run it under Direct3D.

I’m not trying to force OpenGL (in fact I couldn’t even find such a setting under Player Settings). Could it be they haven’t got Direct3D?

It may be possible, but I doubt it. It’s possible to install it from here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=34429

They might also be missing GPU drivers.

Using -force-d3d9 would force Unity to use Direct3D 9, so that might also be worth a shot.

Am I correct to assume that you weren’t able to reproduce it yourself?

That’s right, I couldn’t reproduce their error. And -force-d3d9 or -force-d3d11 makes me show only pink screens.

In player settings, you can set “supported” graphics APIs. Automatic on Windows means Direct3D 9 and 11, and optionally it’s possible to add OpenGL to the list. Is there any chance you’ve disabled automatic graphics APIs and instead selected “OpenGL” only? That would cause it to run on OpenGL by default and make everything pink if tried to run on D3D.

No, game is set to Automatic Graphics API. But when I disable it, OpenGL isn’t in the list. Might the problem be because OpenGL isn’t in that list?

I don’t think so. You wouldn’t really want to ever use OpenGL on Windows anyway. However, if it’s not in the list, I’m wondering why the game starts up using OpenGL in the first place. Does it also start up using OpenGL on your machine?
