Hey guys, I have started a little project building 3D RTS buildings, that I might push commercially in the future, or maybe not.
I’d love to hear what you think so far and any advice, comments, ideas etc that you have.
These are WIPs, so I might change them if I get some really good feedback
One thing I am not sure is how to handle the ground under the archery range/farm. I was going to have plants growing out of small mounds of earth on the farm, and maybe a texture of footsteps leading to the targets on the archery range, but I am not certain how this would work in relation to the ground texture. Any RTS makers know how this would work?
From left to right, castle, farm (sans plants), and archery range. Maya is terrible with transparency so I might have to throw them in Max to get the intended effect.
Very cool art, I just feel sorry for the swordsman, he spend so much money on armor for his legs that he left his torso exposed. The dude is dead in 5 seconds
I like the art style of the RTS buildings, The othographic view makes me think of 2D flash games though, you should post a screen of them in perspective.
The beast guy doesn’t seem far enough a long for me to comment, but his shape looks good.
I really like the bottom half of the swordsman though, if the top looks as good you’ve got yourself a very nice human model to show off. I don’t know too much of anatomy, but it feels like his chest is too short, and his stomach is elongated. But maybe it’s just me.
I’m using 3dsMax, Maya and Photoshop. I like modelling in Maya but it has some weirdness with displaying transparency on textures. Also Max updates PSD textures as soon as they change so it’s easier to paint a bit and see how it looks.
I was thinking for the models, as they are intended for a RTS, thus typically top-down view, you could leave the ground on the archery range/farm empty, just add footprints, and arrows and what-nots on the ground. This makes it so if the game maker wants to have the buildings in a desert area they can just change a plane (or terrain) under the actual farm to fit what they want.
This is just my opinion, but i am not a modeler at all. Looks very good though, hope to see more! Also, a idea for a future project could be to take those models, and show what they might look like mid-construction (the castle missing a wall, the tent yet to be set up etc… so that the game that uses them can have a ‘building in progress…’ model. If you so wanted you can also do a floor plan (outline) of the buildings, so they can use that too, or instead of, the building in progress section. Just some ideas, and as i am not a modeler i do not know how un/realistic what i have said is! So don’t bash me if that is something that will take months of work to do!
Looking good so far, though the buildings most definitely make me think of the Age of Empires series.
If you want, I wouldn’t mind using them in the creation of my RTS project I’m doing. I’m to the point where I could use buildings and units. Right now my units are cubes… Kind of makes it hard to tell if it’s working right some times.
It’d also let you see how it looks in game, but, it’s your choice. (I can stick with my boxes for the time being. I’d make my own quick stuff, but I’m in the UK, 4000 miles from home for the next two and a half weeks, so I don’t really have 3ds max to make the stuff I need.)
(Oh, and note that I do unity stuff in my spare time, so it may be fairly slow before I finish. I’d like to be able to make it for multiple systems {PC, MAC, iPhone, ETC) and have it all compatible between all of the systems.)
