[WIP] Ball Pin(First Unity Demo)

Hello Unity Community,

I would like to share with you my first ever Unity Demo called Ball Pin! Why Ball Pin you ask? Because Pin Ball was taken  When I first started this game I had vague memories of a game I used to play at a carnival when I was very young but could not remember the name for the life of me!

As random as games at the carnival where this one actually felt like it required a little skill! As ironic as it is at first glance it seems just the opposite . . . All you could really do was drop a coin in a see through case with pegs and hope that it lands in the right spot. If it did, then you got a prize! The funny part is I still never found out the name of that game until I had this Demo half complete. I was showing it to my buddy the first time revealing it to anybody and he went “OH! Like that game Planko!” So there it is - the first idea behind this game is Planko.

Now everyone remembers the game connect four right? That’s the second idea - You must hit all four win pins to pass the level. The catch is that, you only get 1 drop.

The third idea is the warm cold game that I know EVERYONE has played at least once. Blue = Cold, Green = Cool, Yellow = Warm, Red = Hot and is the Win Pin!(This is implemented in only the first level but will be added to latter levels when the game is finished)

To play the game select link to download the playable demo. (Use 1920 x 1080) Screen Resolution for best performance.

After you download the files, extract them, and make sure the BallPin.exe and the data files are in the same folder and it should work!

Can anyone beat all 10 levels?

Thanks in advance for your feedback,

It’s a cool tech demo and the concept has potential to work well on mobile. Have you thought about what the visuals of the final game will look like? If you’re planning to make it look like an arcade machine then the 2.5D look it has right now with all the 3D cubes can work well,
but if you’re planning to go for a more abstract theme - for example turn the cubes into clouds or bricks or something then your best bet would probably be to alltogether get rid of the 3D aspect and use sprites, since it will make the game look cleaner, which is especially important on mobile.

Other than the visuals, your concept gives you a lot of space for level design - on latter levels you can have moving or rotating cubes, obstacles that pop in and out, special cubes, bonuses, etc.

If you want to go that way I suggest checking out a game, called ‘Peggle’, if you haven’t done so already. It’s got gameplay similar to yours, in the sense that you drop a ball from the sky and must clear all obstacles with a certain color and Peggle has some examples of great level design, so you can perhaps find some ideas in there.

Good luck with the development of your game!

Hey Danny,

Thanks for testing out my game. Ya I was going for more of an arcade game feeling with the ball bouncing around, pins lighting up, with lots of cool sound effects and different obstacles. What level did you get too? I ask because on level 4 the obstacles start to move. Thanks for also sharing the game Peggie with me. No I had never seen it until now. It does have a lot in common with the game I made. That game felt more like a marble blast game to me then what I’m going for though. I was more or less going for a logical game with obstacles you had to figure it out other than launching one marble at the others to blast them away. It did have some marbles that would not break so in essence it was creating obstacles but in a different way than mine. If you get past the 4th level you’ll see that it gets a LOT harder and cooler too.

By the way I played Cubette all the way through. It was a lot of fun. What’s stopping you from putting it on the app store? Seems pretty polished to me. You could maybe add some more lvls but that’s about it.

Thanks again for the review and good luck to you too!

The game is simplistic yet enjoyable. got stuck on lvl 4. one thing i would say it really need in a introduction level as it took me a while to get the hang of things but other then that i think it is a really fun idea so keep up the good work.
