WIP Cubette - A Game Where You Murder Wooden Cubes

Hello, fellow developers and game enthusiasts,

I’m a hobbyist game developer, I’ve been developing little silly games for quite a while now, but I thought I’d finally give it a shot and try to build and publish an idependent game and see how it goes. So here it is, the thing I’ve been spending a fair chunk of my spare time the last few months.

The concept is simple, kill the red cubes by making them fall of the edge, but don’t kill any green ones.
I believe this concept can make for a great game, and becuase I haven’t seen any successful games that do a similar thing I decided that that’s what I’ll go with for my first actual game.

I stitched together this crappy trailer (I’m not famous for my video editing skills) which I believe does a fair job of showing what the game is. also royalty-free music rocks

If you’re interested of giving the game a shot and trying it out, a test build is now avaiable on Newgrounds.

I’d say you’ve got a potential winner on your hands there! The concept is solid and the puzzles look very well thought out. I love that the faces animate. I’d be tempted to make the eyes procedural so they can look in the direction of the nearest physics action – it’d add even more character. If you could make their expressions change slightly depending whether they ‘think’ they’re safe or not? (Perhaps whether their current velocity vector leads to stable ground or all opposing colour squares are gone.)

Targeting mobile first?

My only negative comment, one programmer to another: there’s undoubtedly room for a bucket load of visual polish. It’s depressing but most people judge books by their covers and gameplay by its graphics :-\

Good luck!

Yes, I am targeting mobile first, thus the next to nonexistent menu with giant buttons. I’ll definitely be working more on the visual side of things, so far I’ve been focusing mostly on the inner workings of the game.

I loved your suggestion about the procedural eyes, although I’m not sure how well it will work on mobile since I’m trying to get the game to run properly on low end devices as well. Perhaps I’ll make it work with just 4 or 5 states of the eyes though. Even if I don’t get it running on mobile I’ll definitely add something along these lines if I find some success and end up doing a PC port.
Thanks a ton for the feedback

I like simple but logical games like this. Great job! It’s actually very similar to the demo I just posted lol . . .

Amazing dude, this blew me away man. It would make for a great mobile game indeed! I’ve never seen unity collision used that way before. Incredible creativity i must say. Just a quick question though. Who is your target audience? Is it aimed for casual players who want to see how far they can get? or is it for people that are looking for a challenge? The art is nice too, did you design it yourself? :open_mouth:

There have been such games made before, even j03d4d said it’s very similar to something he’s done recently.
The target audience is a tricky one. It’s a mobile game, so naturally a big chunk of the players who try it out will be casual players and for that purpose the first 12 to 24 puzzles are very simple and then the difficulty quickly ramps up. That way people looking for a challenge will quickly blast through the first levels and the casual players will have had a chance to decide whether or not they want to invest more time in the difficult puzzles. At least on paper.

Well our games are still quite a bit different. They are similar in the way that they both depend on little user input, require a bit of logic, and rely heavily on gravity. Your game looks a little more complete/polished. I’m planning to release this for Android once it’s complete.
