My name is Hezekiah i am a 2D pixel artist, a concept artist and a c# programmer. For the past few weeks I have been making this game that I’ve decided to name “Ice Escape”. It is a 2D puzzle platformer.
The story of the game is that you control a snowball, to get to the end of the game you will have to defeat seemingly impossible puzzles, hard bosses, themed levels, and other weird things that the player comes across.
My goal isn’t to make it a big game, or to make it into the mainstream. all i want the player to do is Just run, kill enemies, figure things out, have fun. Simple as that. It’s a fun little game i decided to make that reminds me of my childhood memories playing similar games.
It is currently in alpha at the time of this post so the game could go through massive changes. I’m open to any criticism good or bad, since i want to be proud of this game and know that once i put it out i won’t get a horrible reputation from it.
LOL - thanks - you could have also just said - sign up for Twitter lazy!
Some suggestions for improving graphics.
The snowball doesn’t read all that well in most of the scenes above. Consider increasing the size of the snowball so it reads better and some small subtle details can be added to him.
Consider adding some type of movement swoosh trail effect. That would draw the users to where the snowball is.
Consider adding some fake highlighting on the snowball that reflects each level. Since he is just a simple little ball. Adding some small highlights that reflect the environment might make him a little more exciting and fit each level nicely.
The default shading for snow is differing shades of grey and blue, but adding a little shading to match the environment might be nice.
Which ever heart containers are the snowballs, consider making them something related to a cold environment. Maybe make them ice sickle or ice cubes or something related. Maybe show them melted when the snowball looses them, instead of just making them disappear or turn empty.
Consider removing the loosely related pepsi symbol. That is a trademarked logo, and even though it’s not exact, suggest not tempting people to take unwanted notice of the represented logo. Instead consider making it a generic soda logo - snowfalls cola - or something.
I’ll consider tweaking with the snowball’s size, i was experimenting with how it looked for a while now, it used to be WAY smaller than that ;).
a trail effect isn’t a bad idea, i can implement it easily
the snowball’s sprite won’t be used in the future, i drew it up since at the time i didn’t have someone to work with me on the pixel art. Each level will have a theme, so fitting the character toward the theme of the level it is on is a good idea as well.
It seems fitting to make the players health display something winter themed, i might stick with the hearts or i might just ditch it entirely, it still needs a bit more thought into it.
and lastly I’ll just redo the sprite for that boss, anything to avoid copyright issues
Honestly, when i was just starting this game out, i didn’t think i would have made it this far into development. I used to look down upon indie games and developing as something not worth while, but i forget that programming has made me into the person I always was. Day in and day out I work on the game, i always have ideas for it, and i love indie development (As of right now, since it can and it will get hectic at times).
