[WIP] Infinite Dust

Hello Everyone!

We are a small team of 2 developers based in Switzerland. We embarked on this adventure 3 years ago in our spare time: It’s called “Infinite Dust” and is a Space Sandbox (yes, another one!).

Project History

The project was initiated by 2 gaming-enthusiasts in July 2014. It’s important to know that at the time we started creating it, this style of game didn’t really exist yet; “No Man’s Sky” and others had hardly emerged. Nevertheless we didn’t walk away from our universe and continued developing it.

We are well aware of the tremendous work and resources required for such a project. That’s why we are working on a prototype, which will be representative of the final game, hoping to obtain the necessary resources to finalize the development and make it accessible to the public. The prototype is being developed full-time since the beginning of this year and will be presented at the many gaming-related European conventions in September. And who knows, maybe even beyond Europe in a near future.

Game description

Infinite Dust is a survival, solo or multiplayer FPS game that takes place in our galaxy, which is colonized by men in a distant future. As a player you are an explorer of “The Fleet”, a wandering faction in space on the haunt of new habitable planets where you will be able to establish outposts or new colonies. Your main goal is to survive by exploring your environment and exploiting the mineral resources of planets, asteroids, moons – or exploring ruins of forgotten civilizations, shipwrecks and other vestiges of past wars.

As an explorer you will have to be ingenious in the designing and construction of structures that will be able to protect you from wildlife and climate. You will also have to manage the building of vehicles in order to move on land and in the air, which will then end up in becoming even larger vessels to help you explore the interstellar space and its dangers by travelling over longer distances. All these features are possible thanks to a current catalogue of 150 items, including building blocks, modules, mechanisms, consumables etc.

Scenario

At the moment, there is no such thing as a scenario for the game yet. We would rather describe it as a background in which the universe of Infinite Dust was embedded. The player is free to choose whether he wants to privilege the exploration or the mining of minerals for the construction; in the end the aim stays the same: to survive.

Multiplayers are designed to create factions or cooperations between players, which enables the creation of own scenarios. However, if the project reaches a sufficiently advanced stage of development, we will set up a narrative plot in the form of quests, which will lead the player onto several planets. All this in parallel to the progress of the player, in order to unlock some unique items in the game.

Development

Currently the game is still at an early stage of its development and we have just released version 0.1.8, which brings its major batch of improvements and implementations like a full backup or building system.

The Infinite Dust project continues to grow and we are getting to our goal step by step: the creation of a functional prototype for September in order to promote our project at gaming dedicated conventions.

Hereby the list of the additions and optimisations we brought to version 0.1.8:

  • Optimization and new 3D assets for the tropical environment: caves, oceans and islands

  • Improvement of the display distance (X5) and optimized terrain loading

  • Increasing of the loaded surface: currently around 48 km2

  • Improvement of the physics of the player (terrain collision)

  • Complete redesign of the game interface

  • Optimization of the item system

  • Implementation of the construction system

  • Addition of building blocks (5 voxel block models, 4 window models, stairs, automatic doors)

  • New backup system

  • Implementation of first AI’s and basic behaviour testing

  • Improvement of the cave topology

Nothing better than a video to show you the progression !

This looks kinda cool. Very vibrant!
It looked like there was some odd large pixeling of the shadows around the buildings, which didn’t look very good.

I also think the mirrored refraction in the scope might get kinda annoying to players after about 10 minutes of playing. Might consider reducing/minimizing that effect.

Really like the monster concept art above. Look forward to seeing more of what you have in store.

Hi!
Thanks for your comments!
I think the problem with the shadows on the voxels block, comes from the low quality of the shadow during the shooting of this video. We had forgotten to put the quality to the maximum … For the scope effect, we can looking for minimize or improve that effect who’s a little strong yet.

For the monster (The “Queen”), you must wait this summer to see it appear in the game;)

In the meantime, we will post news about the progress of the project, soon as possible!

Hello,

Nice project.

Are you thinking about adding a feature where a colony is attacked?

Hi!
Yes the player will have the opportunity to craft turrets for terrestrial and air defense. Protective walls can also be built around the base. Usefull when the night fall

Looks very nice. Are environments procedurally generated?

Yes, we using a very powerfull generator to create the environments (with smooths voxels) and a few processors to place some game objects like trees, details etc.on the ground. A physic on voxels exists, and dynamic water is work in progress.

Hello everyone !

Version 0.2.0 of the Infinite Dust prototype will soon be ready for the Gamescom 2017. Meanwhile, we will reveal a small trailer that will be broadcast during the convention. You will be able to see a little more of Gameplay and the advances on this version.

looks great and all. i would diff give it a try but here some information about the market,

currently from what i have observed past 3 year’s, is that there are far to many of these survival games that are to similar and if you’re goal is to make it into the marked as a Survival genre game u really need to show people that it’s not just another one of those forever EA titles or badly optimized or cash grab games.

this might sound like i am harrasing you two but trust me i am not, i have faith in many companies, people both on steam, unity,

that being said goodluck to both of you and i really do hope this game is going to be sucessful.

This looks brilliant! What platforms will this be available?

Thank you for your comments,

Yes, other games of the same kind exist, we do not want to make a dumb copy of what exists. Simply develop a good voxel game and optimized.

For now, only on pc…

Hi everybody!

After many months of silence, we are back this time to put you in free access the prototype 0.2.2 of Infinite Dust!
Indeed, after several months of conventions and festivals to present the prototype to investors, our quest for funding to bring the game to life has been unsuccessful for the moment. However, we showed some enthusiasm on the part of the players around the project, and we decided to make the prototype available to you for free!

We achieved our goal with just 2 peoples, the development of a prototype of a very ambitious game but which now requires more consistent means to be alive.

The project doesn’t really stop, however; we will continue to update the page on Game Jolt and Facebook and on the various forums on which we’re present. It’s not excluded that a crowd funding will be organized in the near future, if the project is gaining popularity. The goal of the prototype would be also to help us to federate a small community and start on a good foundation, if this option becomes viable. This could allow us to devote fully to the project and to be able to build a team to develop an alpha version much more complete and stable than the current version 0.2.2
.
In the meantime we invite you to test and make us feedbacks about the prototype. This is a technical demo, the game still has a lot of bug and systems that were under development, and therefore only partially work. Most of the bugs you will encounter are mostly known.

Here is the features currently available in the prototype 0.2.2:

  • 5 biomes available (rain forest, savannah, islands, ocean and mountains)
  • Day/night cycle
  • Dynamic weather
  • Possibility to build your own base with different building blocks (new system and new blocs )
  • Physical destruction of building blocks
  • Functional defense turret
  • Beacon and compass who’s indicating the objectives and their distance
  • Quest system, this gives you the first goals to reach for at least the first 10 minutes of play
  • Possibility to mine the ore present on the ground
  • Possibility to craft
  • Ability to store in containers
  • Possibility to farm animals present and functional loot system
  • Ability to pick up food and cook
  • Medical Pod, this module only serves to set a spawn point in case of death
  • Statistics of hunger and thirst (you must eat and drink), stamina of the player and power supply of the suit (you have to manage your torch light at night and can be only reloaded the day)
  • Leveling player and wildlife (be careful don’t attack stronger than yourself)
  • AI attack and aggro system (avoid Hornix nests or Arachnids scouts groups for example)
  • Save the game

Enjoy!

Wow, this is really coming along. I love the landscape – it’s so colorful and creative. Also, I think the music really fits the whole aesthetic…keep it up guys!

Looks really cool, hope you get funding!

PS: Please learn from No man’s sky mistakes. I.e graphics and landscape is cool, but if the gameplay sucks, the game will suck.

Good luck!

Thanks guys ! Actually our game play is embryonic and requires a lot of work and money before to have a game that differs from No Man’s Sky, and this is very ambitious. Maybe, one day…

Don’t hesitate to give us a feedback and your ideas !

Hello everyone !

After your feedback on version 0.2.2 of the prototype, we are currently working on the development of version 0.2.3! On the menu: complete redesign of the items catalog and craft components, improvements and bug fixes in the inventory and in the building system, add of new building parts, correction of colliders and camera clipping, correction of backup bugs, major improvements on the player (mobility and jet pack), and more!

Below, the link to the Devlog on our Game Jolt page of what has already been developed for version 0.2.3:

Woah lovely!

Hi there!

We are back with Infinite Dust 0.2.3! You can download the latest version for free here:
https://gamejolt.com/games/infinite-dust/340343

As explained in our last devlog, the main changes concern:

  • a massive overhaul of the item catalog (from 217 to 147 items) and a simplification of the crafting system which was too demanding in the quantity of components to be assembled.
  • The ore distribution has been revised in order to have raw material much more accessible to the surface. (we also go from 11 to 7 types of collectable minerals)
  • Fixed major bugs in the backup (ex: parts of the station and the beacon that disappear after loading a backup)
  • Addition of new building parts and placement, bug fixes and optimization of building system
  • Fix problem of far clip plane on the camera
  • Fixed major bugs in the inventory
  • Added features “Equip”, “Use”, “Upgrade”, “Remove”, “Destroy”, “Throw” in the inventory
  • Improved player locomotion and jet-pack

You can read our devlog in detail on our Game Jolt page:
