Hi Everybody,
This is the first post for a new Asset Store product I am currently working on, which I have just finished block concepting… so thought I would share some material and hopefully get some constructive criticism & feedback!
The asset will be a modular cockpit creator, which snaps together so users can create custom interiors for their first person space exploration games etc. For the final asset I am planning on having:
- Prefabs for each component with multiple game objects for different set-ups (e.g. controls, monitors, drop down displays…) all animated.
- Futuristic HUD/UI on glass panelling and monitors.
- Some cool strip lighting.
All the meshes will be modelled in high poly, and baked in Substance Designer… the asset will include the .sbs substance materials with exposed parameters for commonly editable properties such as colour, smoothness, grunge, scratches, damage, etc… as well as the ability to place custom texture decals to customise the cockpit with your own fleet’s emblems.
Here’s a link to what it looks like so far:

Any & all feedback welcome… Thanks!

Wow, that sounds perfect. I’ve had a “programmer art” placeholder cockpit in my spaceship game for quite a while now; it’d be great to have some real PBR textured stuff to replace that with. Big thumbs up on high poly too.
Cool, thanks! Keep an eye out for updates, should be ready in a month or two…!
Hey Everybody,
Update! Have modelled in detail to the cockpit, keeping with the modular fashion. There are plenty more hidden objects that you will be able to enable/disable to customise different loadouts for the cockpit, this is just one example.
I have uploaded a 360 video: https://goo.gl/BZRAd8, check it out!
Next stage is to unwrap it all, make high poly meshes and take it into Substance Designer!
Thanks,
Elliott
Super cool.
Will it be modular enough to make it so that you can look down and see out the cockpit? I love that in your 360 degree video you can look left, right, and up and see out. I’ve found that in VR, it’s cool to be able to also look down/left and down/right at enemy ships or whatever. Ideally, thinner supports would be an option too. If they are too thick they block a lot of the view.
It’s natural that sci-fi fighter type ships are often use fighter jets as their main influence, but more of a helicopter style cockpit that opens up the view might be better for games where you can look around (like VR games or even games with mouse or thumbstick freelook, TrackIR, etc).

Hey Steve,
Nice idea, I’ll make some floor meshes with glass to achieve that ‘helicopter’ look that will snap with the modular style. I will also make 2 versions of the supports, one that size and one thinner.
Thanks for the feedback,
Elliott

@ebutler3D Is this project dead? If so, bummer.
Hey Steve, unfortunately yes… working on an unreal project now
