[WIP][TBS]Space Strategy Game

Idea: 2D planet conquering turn based strategy game.

Planetary Risk with some twists perhaps?

-Start as a faction with a home planet and assorted technology blah blah.
-Costs money, time and perhaps a type of resource to build “paths” to other planets to allow quick travel time between them (a couple turns) as opposed to sub-light deep space travel that could take almost as long as building the “paths will”
-This turns it into a balance game of spending resources to build forces, placing them and a balance of whether to build roads for quick transit or just use resources to amass forces.
-Perhaps cap the number of slots available on a planet to build roads? This would remove the possibility of one hub planet with tons of roads or all planets linking to all planets which would remove some strategic elements.

I’m planning on trying to implement this with UNITY3D. Does anyone with experience in this engine or other engines have suggestions? This is my first crack at what should be a graphically relatively simple game leaving the focus on the possible storyline and gameplay as I think all the best games do. Combining awesome graphics with good storyline and gameplay just helps.

This is a screen shot of what I have now.

I’m currently implementing this concept with a skybox. I’m trying to get my sun to look right which I think I’ve accomplished using the sun flares from the resources. I don’t have the expertise as a graphics background to develop good looking planet textures, nor do I currently know the best way to implement the texturing of the planets to allow shading.

I do have some programming background as a Computer Engineer and I hope that comes in handy when scripting things. I greatly appreciate guidance and help that people can give me, I’m considering putting this on kickstart.com to get funding in case anyone has a lot to contribute this would allow me to pay them.

I realize there’s a lot to flesh out the gameplay details and welcome input, as well as the graphical aspects. I welcome your input on any and all things. This is my first project of this sort and I’m currently unfamiliar with Unity.

Can’t decide what should i say as there’s not much picturesm webplayer would help alot.

I don’t have much else to offer besides the screenshot unfortunately. I was hoping others could contribute in how to implement this and keep me from sucking in the implementation. Also, I could use some guidance on toolkits and the learning curve.
