[WIP] The Core Chronicles - Action Adventure RPG

The Core Chronicles - Reborn

So I previously posted about this game about 4 or 5 months ago as Christmas Ham Games and almost got a alpha client out… Then I got an error with no trace-back making the game unrecoverable. I have learned from my mistakes and I’m remaking the game that I desired to make 5 months ago. The Core Chronicles is back with a new solo dev name B3nac Games.

Game story (Still evolving): The hero is on a rogue planet beneath the rogue planets surface. He wants to know why he and his fellow people have been shunned to live beneath the surface. The curiosity will take the hero to places he never imagined and foretell the tale of history forgotten.

Gameplay (Will change as polish is applied): I’m going for kind of a Zelda feel with more action and exploration.

Here is a current screenshot I will be posting Devlog vids and progress every week. Stay tuned! :]

Nice, I like the old school feel to it. Especially with the slug. Though that attack animation looks more like a scream and run for your life animation to me.

Awesome stuff! This looks like it will be some great fun.

Yeah much better with the main char. Also the slug part is great!

I’m really surprised this thread doesn’t have more posts. It’s pretty cool to see your game develop

I don’t have anything bad to say on the gameplay front. It looks pretty fun and the overall combat and enemy behaviour stuff looks pretty well developed.
To me the biggest problem is the art style. You should probably read up on some pixel art tutorials to get a more consistent look going.
I saw a pretty darn fantastic one a while ago. If you want I’ll try to find it and post it here later.

A few things I noticed right away are:

Your artstyle is not consistent and each sprite seems to follow it’s own rules. For example the black outline. Some sprites have one, some don’t. Try to avoid inconsistencies like that.
The tiling in your mapping is very visible. All the trees and shrubs use the same sprite, are non-animated and all fit perfectly on the grid. Try breaking that up.
The ground tiles have way too much contrast, which again causes very visible tiling and gets tiresome for the eye.
Also, the trees look out of place because they have a much higher resolution then any of the other sprites, making them look weird and washed out.

Hope this helps, take it easy and keep it up!

Hey, good job! =)
The game looks pretty good imo, sadly I cant give you as great tips as Inko since Im just a noobie.
Just the sounds are a bit annoying, like the attack sound. It should be more “calm” I think, since now it “hurts” ears.

And again, great game!

New trees added. Going to be adding more variety tomorrow. Also thinking about adding enemies in the trees.

Finally got some time to work on the shrub monster more.

After I add the shrub monster and one other enemy I think I’ll release a demo of the first area.

Good project and good game i follow you ! Good luck

Thank you I appreciate it. I’ve been pretty busy lately but I’ll be working on this game in my spare time. The indie struggle is real.

Shrubmonster “Probably come up with a better name eventually.” - animation and implementation so far.

After I polish up the second enemy. I’ll release a client to see how people like the game so far. The town houses will be explorable along with the cave and town itself.
