[WIP] The Crazy Program - Action Puzzle Game

I’m currently working on a game in Unity called The Crazy Program. It’s a action-based matching puzzle game.

Now available on Android!

We’ve got a small team for this game, most of the Sokay crew that worked on Donut Get!

Characters

Even in a non-character based game such as this one, characters are an important part of our Sokay Games. I have to admit that we’re still working on a way to get the characters properly in the game, aside from the cinematics that move the story along. Story stuff isn’t planned for the first release, we’ll get it in with additional modes for a future update.

Development

For this game I used ex2D, as it was recommended to me. It seems great for sprite management, it has great interface, but I had a hard time handling a lot of the UI stuff working solely with it. Seems like a lot of people are pissed at the ex2D devs for disappearing as well, but for what it is and its cost it seems helpful. Will probably be going back to NGUI for handling UI elements! I’ve heard EZGUI is good as well, might check that out.

You can play a web player alpha version of the game. We’ve almost got it ready for release. There are some nasty bugs with the gameplay where the blocks disappear or get stuck in the wrong places. Once that stuff’s ironed out we intend to do a first release and update it periodically based on feedback.

Platforms: iOS, Android, PC, Mac, and OUYA.

Please let us know what you think!

Nice. Took me a while to figure out how to operate it… that you can drag a tile further than one place and also that you can drag the same time even further than one spot after you let go of it… mainly that’s because I’m comparing it to having played typical match 3 games… and also not being able to do a vertical movement threw me a bit. But once you get the hang of it it’s ok.

yep steep learning curve. A tutorial would really help.

But its a nice tight game play, very good. I’d want that on my phone.

Thanks for playing and the feedback guys! I feel like Bejeweled has sort of poisoned the well since people think all puzzle games have to be like it, even though it was far from the first puzzle game.

Sometimes it takes the 50th time I hear something for it to register! haha. I’ve heard a lot that it needs a tutorial but I think it easily makes sense. I understand the problem is not understanding that tiles can’t move vertically so I’m going to try some things to make that movement limitation clearer to the user.

I’d like to do a tutorial but I’ll probably have to save that for the first update.

Thanks again for giving it a shot!

Still hacking away at this!

Here’s a Vine video I made of the game today:

E3 has come and gone, had the opportunity to let a bunch of people give the game a shot. I managed to tone done most of the nagging gameplay bugs to it’s mostly a smooth experience right now. Still some polish and optimization to be made but that’s less worrisome for me.

This past weekend I started hacking away at some Facebook integration for high scores. A couple of my friends had suggested it and I decided to go through with it for the first release. It’ll basically allow you to save high scores and see the scores for your friends as well. I made a quick FB version of Donut Get! late last year (https://apps.facebook.com/donutget/) and I’m using that as a template for how it’ll work.

As I’m ripping out all of the story/progress based goals for the game, I’m trying to see if competing with scores is enough to keep people playing it. We’ll see!

I had received some comments about the game not being “flashy” enough so I added some particles to the block clear effect. It’s borderline overdoing it, but I like it. I added some additional effects to make the blocks shake when you’re about to lose as well.

I’ve got some controllers from MOGA and OUYA is finally released. I’m planning to have a first release on mobile before I implement controller support. I ported Donut Get! to OUYA pretty quickly so I’ll probably do an OUYA release as soon as I can get it working with a controller (and I should probably get an OUYA to actually test it with!).

The Crazy Program is released on Android!
