Hi, I’m Josh, this is my first post, which just so happens to be the time that my class and I started making a Wizard of Oz 3D game that allows three players to play at once on three screens. We’re going for a darker feel for the happy world of Oz. You play as either the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion. Dorthy has been kidnapped by the Wicked Witch of the West and you three have to rescue her, fighting through four levels in a beat’em up style game. We spent last week concepting out the game and the characters, and this week we are finishing up the character models. Here a few images of our work so far (just the cowardly lion, I still need to get everyone’s work and put it on here). The images are the model sheet and the high poly sculpt. If you guys would tell me what you think that would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time and there will be other images and updates real soon!
That is looking GREAT! He will look awesome.
I really like the concept and I can’t wait to see more! Keep up the good work ![]()
Like it ![]()
haha the cowardly lion is a TANK
I love the concept, your artistic ability and the way the character came out. Congrats and keep up the good work - this promises to be a new classic!! ![]()
The highpoly model looks nice. I’m interested about the polycount.
UPDATES!!!
TINMAN (JR)
(concept)
I would like to thank everybody for the complements and the support, more will be here soon, there were some technical difficulties uploading the rest of them. Be expecting more around 5 o’clock, thank you everyone!
Now the 5 o’clock update (a little early but)
TREEMAN (Eric)
(a rough texture)
Next week we are going to start rigging, skinning, and animating, so be expecting updates next week.
Wacky cool. Sounds really fun and the models are looking good. Can’t wait for it to be done
.
That looks interesting. I love Wizard of Oz.And a darker version that makes it even better. It could be like American McGee’s version of Alice.
Oh, about the lion, I think it’s tail is sticking out a bit weirdly, but aside from that it looks really nice and detailed. But how’s the polycount? You might have a problem with such a high poly character. Although you can always make a low poly version and use your high poly version to generate a bump map.
Nice, nice ![]()

yeah, we will be using the high poly sculpts to generate normal maps. our poly target per character is ~3000 polys/6000 tri’s.
heres a small update:
evil tree in unity.
i need to finish sculpting my level 1 bridge and start concepting the level 2 swap/marsh/dry creek bed? weird contradiction there
So we haven’t updated in a while because it is crunch time(I understand what the pros go threw, BUT THEY HAVE IT A LOT WORSE!!!) Here are some screen shot of the lion model rigged and animated! Be expecting the game soon!

This modeling work looks great.
As far as making Oz “dark” goes however I think you need to know what you are doing to pull that off. Baum himself very consciously stripped the dark elements out of fantasy as he was trying to reinvent the fairy tale for modern american children (at the turn of the century). And he gives an indication in the forward to the Wizard of Oz of why he did this. It has partially to do with the psychology of the time, a budding American modernism which abhorred superstition and was skeptical of religion if not out right atheist. It also might have laid some of the roots for today’s “positive thinking” psychology which has infiltrated corporate culture.
Anyway, I think a dark Oz should address this. If not, I think you are removing a great deal of what makes Oz what it is.
McGee’s Alice on the other hand was very very easy to make dark - as the original story treads the line between madness and non-sense. threfore it doesn’t serve as an appropriate model for Oz.
Again however - none of what I have to say detracts from the great work you have so far done. The character work is excellent.
Hello fat foot
