So ive been doing weekly updates of my game on youtube, im not getting many views or anything but i’ve had a large number of people asking my to work for them, or them help me. I’m very proud of what i have been working on but im getting worried someone will come along and steal the idea, not gameplay wise, but visually! Theres nothing unique about my game, its basically a clash between a number of rpg/mmo’s out today.
But i need an opinion, should i keep making these updates or wait until the game is near completion?
If it’s nothing unique, then they would not be stealing ideas from you, they would be stealing them from the same people from whom you are stealing them.
Hmm. I think if a game is really well done, no matter how people copy, it won’t beat the original. Therefore i think idea is rather free flow. No such thing as stealing since we all can/might have thought of same thing before just not having to implement it.
I put all my dev diary vids on youtube on a weekly basis too. You should check them out man :), about to take a look at yours.
Anyway, if someone steals my idea then good luck to them :P, providing I still see my vision come to life im not to bothered right now. I say that right now because I make the games for fun and to learn new skills in unity, but if it was a serious project then I would probably be pretty annoyed at that point.
I don’t think yo can steal an idea. Sure, people can get inspiration from you, but if they do, and they become competitive, you should make the better product.
On second hand i dont know why would someone copy your art style or visual game appeal. That is almost nonsense, most of games are unique in visual appeal.
I don’t think there’s such a great game idea that’s a recipe for success. It might help or not, but you’d still need to do it right, and you also need right timing, and the right advertising.
I have similar concerns as a Solo indie if you have a good or novel idea and start letting people know about it then there is the potential for a group or team to run with it and release it faster than you can!
The trouble is working alone youre not sure if your onto a good idea or if your taking it in the right direction.
Let’s face it even if you don’t show anyone and you release a great game idea, expect people to clone it extend it and improve on it!
At least if you show it off you can get feedback and improve it just focus on making it and completing it.
The balancing point is probably when you have your own ‘unique’ artwork and graphics in and it looks the way you want it too look and has it’s own unique style!
Some software houses do have internal forums where they look at popular indie and commercial titles and suggest them up for ripping off. Usually it will be because it is cheaper than prototyping, and usually on a finished or almost finished game.
But this is very normal. Are you not doing the same in your game? I’ll bet money you’ve been inspired by a few games.
