I came on today to do some searching and was amazed at the new amount of posts and such on the forum. I expected more traffic because of Unity Indie becoming free but this did surprise me.
Welcome to all the new developers and have fun with Unity, we do!
Yeah the level of posts looks kind off daunting kind of put me of from posting help… sad …but true and I really should help the newbies I was one once!
The help I got when I started out really put me in good stead to Create “Osprey” my new Iphone Game available for download now! …See that Plug…lol…but seriously I feel a little like a chump as I feel perhaps wrongly that Unity Tech are not doing there bit to make existing Indy paid members feel there needed I personally want to see a announcement that extends the upgrade to Pro from two Months to six months or a year for existing Indy owners perhaps then I will feel more inclined to help more…
Maybe create some new forums (newbie forum?), create some basic scripting tutorials, and have FAQs in each forum. Not just FAQs that point to other links/threads, but FAQs that actually list the most Frequently Asked Questions and give a brief answer to each.
I think it would be better if FAQs were in a sticky at the top of the relevant forums, and answered by Unity employees rather than helpful users. IMHO, of course.
There’s really not that much more posting going on if you eliminate the whining about money – which is sort of astonishing given that the biggest recent event is the tool becoming free.
It’s amazing how it even seeped into this thread. lol.
There are a ton of resources out there for tutorials and such and I think one REALLY good idea is to direct newbies to the alternate sources of info:
Sometimes people stick close to the forums and miss the wonderful array of resources.
BTW, some of those are indirect. For instance they have links to the wiki and irc, etc. Just in case some are wondering why I didn’t include those.
Edit: Oh, I didn’t know about answers.unity3d.com so I added it. And yes, that IS better, imo. As long as people can find it. People named Aaron are so helpful.
I can see the potential benefit of FAQs, but amongst the useful questions I don’t think you see a lot of overlap. There is a lot of territory to cover with specific questions. Thats why I think a site devoted specifically to questions and answers is great.
