.x support

Hi, why doesnt Unity support .x files directly? Is there some sort of reason for it? It would be a lot easier for the modeller to export 3d characters to .x, since he’s using a 3dsmax version with no supported fbx exporter.

secondly, are there good examples out there of a character walking, shooting, etc? Using weighted bones? I’d like to see some code for that.

We’re starting our first real Unity project, for children.

Thanks!

Are there even any mac-based programs that use .x? .x is a DirectX file format if I remeber correctly? I think OTEE’s decision to support .FBX and only a few other formats is fair enough for everyone. I would like them to support .XSI too, but there is no point for them to do that when a universal format like FBX exsists and is supported by most high-end software. With .FBX they can be sure that everyone can get their assets into Unity the same way no matter what 3D app they are using on what platform. Within reason.

New animation techniques? Is this rumors and speculation or fact? Either way, I’d like some juicy details.

While .x is super easy to export/import when you’re using DirectX SDK, for some reason DX SDK does not exist on the Macs… And while text-based .x format is well documented, binary and compressed binary .x formats are not.

What 3dsmax version is he using? Nowadays 3dsmax (7/8 versions) has .fbx support built-in, and for some older ones you can grab .fbx plugins from alias website.

No I was just brainstorming. I don’t know what is going on with Unity, it was more like a question IF something like this is going to happen or not.

Okay, we’ll try and to it without .x then…
