Is it possible to create games in Unity for the Indie game market place on Xbox? If not then are there any plans in place to make that possible?
It is currently not possible. When it will be… I don’t know.
It’s probably better to ask Microsoft when XBIG will support apps not built in XNA. The Unity Engine is written in C++ and I don’t see them rewriting the whole thing in XNA just to support a sales avenue where (with all due respect) most of the titles are going to make very little money. If your game is good enough to get on XBLA, you can already publish with Unity.
Anyone know if Union is an option in this case? or is it simply an issue of Unity not being built upon XNA?
I believe Union is an option in order to get a game on XBLA (not indie games), and possibly even on disc. Feel free to send them an email with any inquiries, and I’m sure they can answer that better than any of us - union@unity3d.com
Unity can’t target XNA not even through Union.
To target XBLA or Disk distribution you can license unity for this purpose, you only need to be a licensed xbox dev and have the needed peanuts to afford it for your project
do you know how possible it is to get a game on XBLA? and by that I mean is it possible for an indie developer to get games published that way? From what I understand you need an xbox dev kit, but how willing is microsoft to give those away? if you know thanks
They don’t give them away, you apply, then pay if approved to get them. For now, worry about making a good game and you’ll have more luck than being some random guy who wants to make a game but has nothing to show.
ya no i got that. but im just wondering if its even possible. im assuming XBLA licenses are cheaper than regular ones?
By “regular ones” do you mean for disc-based distribution?
From what leaked, yes XBLA licensing was in the range of half the price for disk distribution licenses, but in both cases its nothing a regular indie could afford ‘just like that’.
Also the license is per title, not a flat fee like the normal licenses
okay cool thanks.
you can just become an xna creators club member and it only costs $99 annually > after that you make your game however you want using xna software and upload it for approval by the creators club community > then if your game is good and they like it, they put it in the indies marketplace section > that is for indies games > also you might want to know that you need alot of programming knowledge to get your game to work in xna unless if you just want to use some other xna engine with it to make it like sunburn or something > or some other xna engine that makes 2d games easy with next to nothing programming in it > theres alot of opensource xna engines out there with lots of support in their forums too > opensource meaning free > you only really need $99 annually if you want to make an indie game on xbox live marketplace
I saw your game your’e working on and it looks really good. Keep up the good work and you will have a great game in no time
