Would you pay $20 for an IOS game. I dont think I would Yeah I dont think you can raise the bar after people are so used to getting a 99 cent app.
I give it 2 months before it’s selling for $1.99.
I feel like a sucker for getting it at $50 from XBox Live, after reading this.
Kids these days don’t know how lucky you are. When I was your age, we spent over $20 for games routinely…and we liked it! Get off my lawn.
In the inevitable event that someone posts in this thread who is not below the age of 18 - if it hasn’t already happened - I still say the same applies.
I hope it does well. It probably wont though.
And btw, Asvarduil, this version will be somewhat limited, as I understand it, it won’t have all the maps and stuff, so the Xbox version is still worth more.
Oh, good. But, I agree with other posters - it won’t live long on the .99c ecosystem at $20. It will get price cut.
Interesting move. I dont know how much support it will get though, because majority of people that really wanted to play it most likely already have it.
Why would I buy it on my iphone when ive already fnished it on pc…
If it was cheaper I might buy it on the ipad and play through again.
I support the move, Honestly when i see a $1 app i generally know its going to be a shit app. if someone costs more on the appstore I generally think its going to be of better quality, I once bought the $10 spiderman game and it was god awful. Just goes to show what effect a pricetag has.
It’s free this month for Playstation Plus members
EDIT: And to answer the question, yes, I’d pay $20 for an iOS game if it was worth the price.
I think it is more of a niche game with quite a large fanbase, who would happily pay that amount. It does not target the casual Angry Birds player.
So I would say it sells anyways.
Sure.
A few weeks ago my girlfriend bought Carcasonne for iOS. It was $10 or so, for a digital and portable version of a game we already played a lot and continued to love, and had paid $40 for a board game version of. My immediate response was “you paid $10 for an iOS game?!?”
Her response was “You pay more than that for games all the time! And what difference does it make that it’s on an iPad?”
And she was absolutely right.
It’s an odd bit of human psychology that people are willing to pay less for something if it comes in a smaller package. As developers we have to accept that when pricing our games, but what my girlfriend inadvertently reminded me is that someone put just as much effort into making Carcasonne for iPad as they would have making it elsewhere. And it works really well on an iPad, probably better than elsewhere. I shouldn’t expect to play less for something just because it’s being delivered to a mobile device, unless what I’m getting is actually a lesser or cut down product.
So, if Xcom on iPad is actually a $20 game when compared to other $20 games and I’d rather play it on iPad than on PC where I already have it, hell yes I’ll pay $20 for it.
As for whether other people do… who knows?
Most of these people would have already brought the game. Whether they commit to another $20 is doubtful.
I’d consider it. I’ll rephrase that - I already am considering it. The game’s designed to be pretty replayable, and for people who do enjoy re-playing it being able to do so on their iPad is pretty cool - there’s plenty of time when you can potentially play on your iPad but couldn’t do so on your PC or console.
Plus, there’s not much in the way of deeper games for iOS. There are a few, just not many. It could easily appeal to people who want that.
I always wanted to redo the old version for ipad.
Im not convinced the new one had that much re-playability, considering I finished it, and never played it again.
I am tempted, even though I already own the PC version. Furthermore, from a developer point of view - more power to full-price games on the iPad! I don’t see why a game that’s pretty much identical to its PC cousin should be sold for $4.99 only.
I think there’s a bit too much story and not enough randomization. However, if you are still willing to do a rework, you have my full support.
Very good news but too little, too late. For the prices to justify development cost, we need a premium apple store, an apple store which is even more heavily curated, costs 1000 dollars per title to submit, and has a minimum price of 10 dollars for a title.
These large barriers to entry will encourage developers to take large risks as the visibility of the premium store is very, very good. Almost zero shovelware - nobody is going to risk 1k on deploying a title without a lot of confidence behind it.
The above suggestion is penuts compared to console dev, but a step in the right direction imo.
The comments on this toucharcade article are somewhat promising, lots of “insta-buy” and “thank god someone’s finally doing it”, so its not just devs that feel this way. Mobile gamers are starting to become just as cognizant of the fact that $0.99 pricepoints don’t justify development costs for games that aren’t match-3’s with tons of IAP. Several of Square Enix’s premium games have done rather well too, at $16.99, there were several times where they were in the top 10-20 in revenue.
I think the bigger concern is the file size of these games. AAA quality experiences on retina level resolutions require a lot of assets. This game is 4gb to unpack (2gb installed), and Apple still prices their storage space like its 1995. I’d really like to fit more than 4 games on my device, thanks.
I am sure indies would benefit if the price of the app store wasnt rock bottom, but as as a consumer I dont think I would pay $20 for a game on a tablet. I did buy bioshock infinite for full price on the xbox but if it were come on tablet i wouldnt pay more than $5.
Hopefully there will be much larger storage in future, as the lack of storage is also a reason developers lose money, for example you update and people don’t know about it as they had to delete your app to get some space back. That vital iAP is lost, or that way to impress and connect with customers is lost.
A lot of what apple does, isn’t very encouraging for more ambitious projects. Nearly all of it encourages smaller titles with less risk.
A dream, but I agree, we are all tired of playing with those cheap-crappy quality title all over, we need a premium store or something with more “quality”
If this was SquareEnix, the price would not go down. That’s for certain. I don’t know if 2K will cave, but I hope they don’t.
Now, as far as this changing anything, it wont. The only way to change anything is getting rid of the Top charts. As long as top charts are available, the masses will gravitate towards the stuff with the most downloads, and usually that will be the cheapest of the cheap.
