I’ve been taking a look at the behind the scenes - material Criterion Games provides on “Black” (here) when I came across this fantastic dialogue.
Background: Criterion Sound Designer Ben Minto went to Russia to record the russian voices he needed for “Black”. When asking for a 1-day-visa, this happened:
Great stuff no one expects when reading about designing a video-game, just wanted to share this with you. Read the full story here.
I worked with Ben Minto at Acclaim many years ago. I can just imagine this happening.
There have been a few unfortunate events involving developers and the authorities.
I briefly worked at Reflections, then part of Atari. I asked why all the model guns were painted magenta. On a previous Driver, they were motion capturing all the out of vehicle movement in the office car park. Someone in another office called the police saying someone was waving a gun at a group of people. The armed response unit, police helicopter, etc. turned up. Took quite a few hours of sorting out including the promise of not doing motion capture outside and painting all weapons a bright colour.
Trying to think of which company it was where a designer was going through American airport customs. A search of his bag found a price list of weapons. That took a lot of explaining, especially as it was before the days of the internet to show proof quickly.
