I have a graphics tablet, and until recently i have not had much use for it. Today i decided to have a go at making a reference image for a 3D model i will be making later. here is the image:

You have to give him credit for trying. Maybe he didn’t even trace it. Maybe he just looked at it and copied it, like an artist does with a canvas. I do like the Pug-orapter better though.

for those who thought i traced: i never. I found it in a book at the local library, took the book home and drew what I saw.
Boris Vallejo uses a lucigraph and traces photographed muscle guys and babes for his paintings and gets 20k+USD per painting.

Its okay to use references (all the time) and trace (sometimes), just be honest about it.
The one thing I don’t understand, is… why don’t you just use the original image as a reference for the 3D ?
Why make a copy to use as reference when you could use the thing that you used a reference for the copy as reference for the 3D ?
Edit: just to be clear, I am against anyone useing anyone elses drawings for reference for 3D without permission. I just don’t understand that thought process that happend here.
Not to mention how it must have been such a waste of time!
Its common to do a model something inspired off other people’s art and photos, when I go to model/draw a scene, I gather as much reference images as I can, I never copy anything 100% but sometimes I really like a pose/object and pretty much replicate that, its common practice for artists.

Ignoring the fact that this is traced, an image like that is not good for an image plane for 3d modeling, if thats what you’re using it for. You might notice that you can see two arms and two legs. Image planes need to be completely orthographic like your 3d application’s orthographic views. In a perfect side view with no perspective or lens distortion, one leg should perfectly cover the other.
Also, for people who are getting mad at him using this image, if this image is public domain then I see no problem with him using it, besides the problems I mentioned above. Of course, why he posted it in this thread is a mystery to me.
