You've gotta be kidding me.

Why are there pop up and tab adds when you press a button or role over a word?? Why? I scanned my PC and there isn’t anything, and it is only the Unity forums. I don’t know why Unity wants these here unless the website was hacked or something.

Any explanation for this? And if it is in the wrong spot please feel free to move it.

Seems like its computer.

Yeah, this. It’s not the forum.

Oh, I started to download 2 well known open source programs for Windows. Well one program did actually work but I had to uninstall two phony Trojans meant to broadcast the IP I was using (ping) so some remote location could then try and root my computer. Plus hey tried to hijack my browser with ad servers and redirecting of my search queries to other search engines. Of course I removed both of the Trojans and then rebooted all my modems and routers. The install file for one of these Trojans was named ‘uninstall.exe’

This happened at SourceForge and it was multiple projects that had been trojaned. It was obvious on the other program that I didn’t download & install program because it’s normally over 20MB and it was then 774KB when it asked me to save the download file. I and most likely others notified SourceForge and they had corrected it by the next day.

Goat with that username surely you could think of a really funny profile pic to use on the forums?

Crap…just realized it is something on my PC, not here. Gotta go malware hunting…yay, fun!

I cant trust Sourceforge anymore. Last time I tried to get Filezilla it tried to add a few viruses with it

Format C: always helps.

Most of us have been there. Fondly remember playing “whack a mole” in the process list just to get to where I could run McAfee and Adaware for starters. Googling for filenames to realize I had half a days work ahead to clean the mess up.

Good Times! :stuck_out_tongue:

Good Luck!

That is so helpful. On behalf of the OP Thanks!

Task manager → PID → MS-DOS → netstat ano → Look for “Port 569” or anything suspicious and open it in task manager. If it’s not a part of system32 then delete the file

I would not recommend that. Often you get multiple rootkits and backdoors at once. And you or your antivirus will only find few of them. So the annoying effect is maybe gone but your PC and private data are still compromised.

=> boot live cd to format HD and override boot sector (kill boot sector and partitioning, otherwise a rootkit can survive a reinstall of Windows).

/agree_somewhat

The googling that followed resulted in the “edubacation” regarding cleaning things up. Depends heavily on the infection.

That was on XP, a while (years) ago. Have not had issues, yet, that I am aware of, on Win 8.1.

Cheers

Just a note, will never have ads on the forums.

Use HijackThis.exe to remove the crap if all else fails.

I would actually recommend a combination of removal tools. HijackThis and Spybot Search & Destroy are a good start, but you also need to try to identify the specific malware you have and get it cleaned up using official removal tools if possible. Most times a couple removal tools are enough to get you cleaned up but if you have a rootkit it can be especially troublesome. I’ve even seen rootkits that can operate in SafeMode. Most times it’s not necessary to format and reinstall but it depends on how much time you have. Sometimes it’s faster.
