Hi everyone! It’s finally finished. I’ve remade part of The Legend of Zelda II in 3D. It’s now a first person shooter (with a sword), and spans from the beginning of the game to the end of the first dungeon.
This is the first game I programmed by myself, so it’s still a little beta’ish. If you find any bugs please let me know
This is pretty cool. You recreated the gameplay pretty faithfully in 3d. I’ve always wanted to make a 2.5D remake of this game without the insane difficulty.
How many polygons does that Zelda model have though!? She seems like she was subdivided a few times too many…
I can’t look at this right now but will asap. You stuff always puts a smile on my face.
(And I’m happy this is the one you chose to remake. It sorely needed it; it’s the only Zelda game I don’t like! See The Battle of Olympus for what Zelda II should have been. )
I think you did a good job, I was very impressed. The skeletons were impossible to kill so I wasn’t able to get to the boss in the first dungeon. Also, please for the love of all that is holy, decrease the poly count. The walls and floors can be parallax mapped, or even just bump mapped for performance.
Oh boy… I really have to restrain myself not to freak out and blabber something like OH MY GAWD and BEST GAME OF THE DECADE. I loved Zelda II as a kid (and still do today, but with save states ;~), so thank you very much for sharing this little gem. Oh, and the eight year old in me wants to give you a big hug.
I had a few slowdowns every time a rigidbody collapsed (btw: no health amphore from the statue at the palace entrance? Ts ts ts). The skeleton was impossible to kill for me, too. I guess it’s a lot of work to replicate it’s original behaviour. And I still hate the spiders, even more so in 3D.
Good job, had a lot of fun. Thanks again :~)
WOW!!! This is very well done. You have put sooo much work into details… the way enemies get stuck in mid air when hit by the sword, sounds, flashes… everything. Very good work!!! I was playing this smiling all the time. So nice!
I played through Zelda II on Nintendo DS (at least up till castle 9) and find the first part in your game confusing. There should be a cave to find the lamp and I should be able to get through to castle 1 without the candle!
I’ve only played the first Zelda game, but that was really good, well done. You could use larger textures though, the graphics were a bit blurry. You can achieve the 8-bit style with larger textures too. Actually the effect would be even better, nes graphics were never blurry. I loved the little slime things.
Nicely done. My favorite part is the shops in the caves.
I assume I’m supposed to kill a bunch of monsters to buy the candle. Is that right? It may look awesome, but doing that would be really boring. Got a cheat code?
Enter the forest tile between the desert and grass, then buy the meat, go to a cave just South of the castle where Zelda is sleeping, and give the grumbly guy the food. He’ll give you some more money. Sorry OP for giving away your puzzle I just want to see if someone can actually get past the first dungeon since I think it’s actually impossible to kill a skeleton, let alone 4 at a time.
damn… managed to get two hits on a skelton… hitting low. But I still don’t know when I hit and when I dont. I really loved the skeleton fights of the original but then you had your shield. That would be fun here to. Faster movement of the skeleton and a shield of your character.
Thanks everyone for kind replies.
I’ve added a Walkthrough to my blog. hopefully that will let more people play the game all the way through. Just like the original, its hard (or impossible) to beat without a Nintendo Power or something like that.
I definitely made this game for hardcore fans and was so worried over all the things I didn’t include (enemies , magic) that I totally forgot this game is hard as hell!
The Walkthrough should help, and also (after I figure out how to do it) I want to make a video of the game that will show how to kill the harder enemies.
