Zerocoal class WIP.

My class this semester was a level design class that explored several genre’s of games and I wanted to show what we did. Most of these projects were done in about 10-15 class-hours, with a lot of troubleshooting between implementation.

For our first project we were to design a level and program some gameplay for a 2D side-scroller such as Mario. My partner and I came up with a very simple level and then I spent the rest of the available work time trying to program it all. The platforms are supposed to respawn after falling off the screen but I didn’t get that finished in time.

The second project that we were assigned was a rail shooter. I worked on the programming side again and my partner put the level together.

Below are a couple of screenshots from our top-down shooter level (project 3). It was designed to be a maze that the player would have to navigate to find the ship. Starting position is in the top left.

The last project that we worked on for class was to use Unity’s terrain editor to create an outdoor environment. We were told to use the tree editor, create an LODgroup, and make a decal mesh. This was the project that I enjoyed the most because I spent most of it actually creating an environment instead of programming or troubleshooting.

I know that this work is probably very low quality compared to what you guys are used to seeing, but I think that it is important to show people what you are working on to make it feel a bit more real and less like homework.

Looks good

May I ask, where are you taking your classes? I have been looking for unity classes for a while now and cannot find any.

There is a college in Morganton, NC called Western Piedmont Community College where all of the game design classes use Unity, Maya, and Photoshop. It’s a good program to get into and it’s relatively cheap compared to University education.
