I have often gone to post something rude, or pointless, but I usually close the window before I post it when I quickly re-read and ask myself ‘Does this add anything?’
Despite that, here’s a post
Yet I have added nothing.

True, probable most of use do. I know I do. And it is good to bring out in the open so you have added something.
I have to agree that to my disappointment, certain questions of mine have been unanswered because probably the pro’s don’t want to mingle with the nubs.
But it is understandable. There are few pros here, and many nubs have come here on the influx of free Unity. It would be impossible for pros to answer every nub question.
We are sort of like the first wave of Free Unity nubs in a sense. After we sort through all the nub concerns and questions ourselves, we can then pass that information onto the next generation of nubs to come. It will be a little more diffucult for us first wavers, but thats just how it is.
I like to think of the CGTalk Maya forum as a model forum for learning, I spent alot of time there. And there are so many generations of nubs that have passed through there over the years that it doesn’t matter how nub your question is. Someone will always help, because they were at that point at some time in the past, and a more pro user helped them out. But that forum has literally years of waves of users going through it. The Unity Forum will get to that point after a few generations of nubs get pro at Unity.
I looked at your posts, rygoody, and it seems almost every single question you asked was responded too. Maybe the question wasn’t answered, or the problem completely solved, but you did get a response. I saw that there were pros, and even Unity tech people replying.
I’ve been using this forum for about a year now, and to be honest I haven’t noticed a huge explosion of newbies. Not when Unity was available for PC, not when Unity went free. There have always been new users. New users, new questions, etc. It’s been pretty steady (but growing steadily) over the past year.
Most of the time in the IRC chat there are new users getting their questions answered, just like on the forum. The more technical, specific questions will have a smaller amount of knowledgeable people, and therefore will take longer to get answered, but I honestly can’t say that I’ve noticed an influx of new users being ignored or snubbed.
I was about to comment on this precisely. And then there are the questions that are not even Unity related, but basic programming issues, like “what is a class?”
A flat out rude answer is usually not appropriate, but I can see why someone would leave a negative message along the lines of “just check the docs” or “go try it out yourself”. I’ve seen quite a few the “what happens if I […]” type of questions, where it would probably take the person less time to try it out than to post something on the forums.
I guess a lot of people who end up posting rude answers are emotionally attached to the old, less noisy forum. Omnia mutantur, people, you may need to move on. I personally check almost exclusively the Gossip and Showcase forums now, read very few posts, and for technical questions I comment (or ask) only on Answers.unity3d.com - there you get downvote questions you feel don’t belong.
(Edit: I just noticed how very, very late my reply is. I guess that goes to reinforce my point as to where I end up spending the time.)

Well yes its true, mostly every question has been answered.
Grawwgraww grr! Whats with the whining noobs? ![]()
Hasn’t this forum had a pretty honest tone throughout its lifetime though? Maybe its been too long since I did a sharp reply and people have gotten used to the sweet life? ![]()
Yes, we need more AngryAnt and less SlightlyBemusedAnt. ![]()

I personally found this forum to be very friendly from day one.
I got helpful answers to most of my stupid questions, so can’t complain ![]()
But I’ve too noticed more rude people around here lately. I can only think those are angry and impatient teenagers who want everything and right now.
Hopefully they get bored pretty soon and move on to next big thing. ![]()
While I’m a newbie to Unity, I haven’t noticed a lot of rudeness in this community.
For example, I recently was trying to figure out how to code my own Bloom Shader. While no one responded to my post, a good samaritan gave me a polite private message saying, “Hey man, It’s good that you want to code your own, but you’ll need Pro version to do it, because Pro version supports Render Textures. Also, check [this page] - you’ll find that Unity has a Bloom Shader you can use with Pro version already! I hope this helps you in your works.” This helpful, anonymous user prevented me from making a fool of myself (at least, more than I already had), gave me a helpful pointer or two, and showed me respect despite my lack of familiarity with the software.
If you want rudeness, look here. No community I’ve been in has been the equal of that.
I’ve noticed everyone to be really nice to my questions, mostly i think because i tried to show i have a background in it and that i am already a half decent basic programmer. When i was on the torque forum, i’d ask a simple question which wasn’t in there documentation and i’d recieve a “go look at the docs” no reply or a “learn it yourself or buy a book”. God help you if you suggest there engine is an expensive mess with no documentation and elitists on there forum. In 2 years of using torque not once did i finsh a game. There addon packs were often not compatible or no longer supported yet still sold. So all in all guys i wouldnt whine you have a great community and best of all no ones yelled at me because i can’t spell or write grammer well ![]()
