I’ve noticed over the months that this forum is becoming more hostile to post in. I have a list of users that, in my humble opinion, cause 80-90% of the hostility on this board.
There appears to be a great angst against new members’ threads where certain groups of individuals see fit to derail the thread and insult the OP. Sometimes the OP is given a break whilst these certain forum miscreants go ahead and totally train wreck the thread arguing with other posters whom they deem, for reasons of their own stupid logic, not to be fit to post anywhere on the internet.
I suggest a serious review of forum policies and a clamp down of any individual developing a post history filled with nothing but argumentative posts and forum trolling/derailing of threads.
Sadly, this is a forum. trolls shall lurk in the dark, depths of Mordor and arise when the opportunity surpasses. But nothing can be done about it other than what has been mentioned countless times in other threads and before it comes up here ill note it all.
-Monthly fee
-karma
-more staff/more action
So before any goodie feels the need to post about them, Stop, as much as I agree
Just keep reporting posts, it’ll make it easy on the mods to see the offending posts, rather than have them comb through the boards. Also if they know people find the trolls insanely annoying, they should remove the posts or at least issue warnings.
This place used to have a great community vibe, and I agree it has become rather more hostile. Sadly some of that hostility is actually coming from members who were active and positive parts of the community back then.
I guess it’s just hard for some to accept change, especially the changes that happened when Unity became free. It’s frustrating for some to see the same old questions bashed out time and time again, and of course to deal with people who seem to have no desire or inclination to learn and put some effort in themselves. But it’s always been the case even when Unity wasn’t free, it’s just that now there’s more traffic you get to see more of it (along with more of everything else) people are just fatigued and should maybe get some time away from the forums.
Maybe the people who are tired of the same questions being asked over and over again could dedicate a little time to making a document with these common questions and their solutions, and share it with the community.
IF people won’t search the forums or do basic research, why would you make the outlandish assumption that they’d read the document provided? They clearly don’t read the tutorials, the wikis, or the docs now.
They could for sure. But at the same time you must see that it’s not their responsibility to do anything either. There’s no entitlement to free support from a fellow forum user, that’s just given out the generosity of their own hearts and we should all be thankful for it, I know I am.
The thing is I can well understand the jaundiced view that they may have as a result of these sorts of interactions and pestering, which is why I think it’s best for anyone feeling overtly badgered by it all to simply take a short sabbatical rather than over-invest into the forum and regret it.
And of course I’m not saying this is the only source of negative tone or hostility on the forums, just one in that melting pot.
For those tired of the same questions or people not reading enough into the documentation, just direct them to the documentation. Many of my posts lately answer their question and give a link to the documentation they needed and the higher layer up of related information. This way they will most likely read more related information and answer questions that they might have come to the forum for next. They get the help they need, and find out how awesome the documentation is. Also, if a post directing a question to documentation is the only response they get, they will probably read it to see if it does help. I have never seen anyone actually post back in a thread for a better answer after the answer they were looking for was linked as a reference to the docs.
Besides, they might have been searching the docs and just couldn’t find it. Ever been scanning through your own code for a while to have someone point out you missed a glaringly obvious error? That might be the case as well. Game making is taxing on the mind. Not everyone asking for some simple answer is a new 13 year old who hasn’t even installed Unity yet, which is how I see how many posts are viewed by some members here.
Relax, help out where you can and ignore the posts you don’t like(and report the ones that are out of line). Hostility tends to only bring more hostility from my experience.
Hi guys I’m looking to make an MMO and need a team of about 30 people to help me. I can’t program or do art or sound or much of anything, but I have a realllllly cool idea for the game, trust me, ill let you know more once you join the team. Interested?
I agree, even if those posts are sarcasm, its awfully hard to tell if they are. Many people seem to ignore the fact that text doesn’t carry the subtle intonations of spoken language. There is very little to tell the difference and many times its up to the reader to decide what tone it had.
Edit: Now the post above this one, that I can tell is sarcasm.
@Amon
Don’t you have better things to do, like finishing your Mr. Robot clone? :O)
I think doing such lists sucks the same way like the nonsense which comes from the opposite direction, maybe even more as it’s done by intention and not out of an impulse. Anyway fed by the same intolerance, maybe with a tiny taste of police state on top, doesn’t sound yummy.
