Blast away...

Hi,

not much time for unity the last days/weeks but i did at least work a bit for a game which is done by Marco Incitti named Gridwars. It’s a GeometryWars clone from the XBOX/XBOX360. I did some of the gridcode and graphics…

The osx version is bit less heavier as it uses a less compex grid and less bloom on the grahics due to performance reasons. The win version is full blown.
Grids could be freely choosen by pressing F3…

gridwars 2

Enjoy,

update Had a little naming bug in the osx-version. Please download again…

Looks nice, but you may want to post this over at iDevGames instead, since that is about general Mac game development. You’d probably get better/more feedback.

Hi aarku,

i’m not so much after feedback. More after share&enjoy… :O)

Greetings,

Little speedupdate for the more complex grids…

Looking good! Did you created this in Unity?

No he used blitzmax.

That game is nice but it lags really hard on my compy.

That’s a remarkably accurate clone of geometry wars. In fact, you might want to expect a cease and desist from microsoft pretty soon.

The only element that seems to be lacking is the difficulty. In geometry wars, the reason you keep playing is because its so nail-bitingly hard to survive… in this version I found myself totally unable to run out of lives (one death for every two or three extra lives I earned) even with the difficulty setting turned up.

Hey we’re not finished yet… ;O)

@Mr. Animator

By the way have you played at hard?

Yeah, I didn’t find much difference with hard. I think the real issue is that you are capable of outrunning your enemies rather easily with the default controls. In geometry wars you have to be very careful because you’re only capable of moving as fast as the joystick will let you. If I had a pc game-pad handy I’d give your dual analog setting a spin though

okay thanks…i don’t have a xbox on my own…mostly playing with my mouse here…

i am already addicted. … hands shaking

finally had time to play it. well not really but i played it anyway ;p that’s a blast! made me break a sweat! nice fx, fun play. great job!

Hi,

thanks to Simon Armstrong the linux version is online. Hope it works… :O)

Enjoy,

That game is way too easy. It needs a “Legendary” or “Intense” or “Insane” mode. Some tougher badguys would be cool too. I can pretty much play it indefinetly on hard without trying as it is…

Maybe a boss?

Hmmm have you altered the difficulty game settings already and played on hard? Personally i think it’s pretty hard to reach a million then…now outed as a bad gamer? Anyway if so i will all beat ya in Archon! ;O)

Greetings,

well getting to a million is pretty easy. in fact overall the game is easy. but i think that’s why it’s so fun. my cpu isn’t so strong (but my graphics card is). the game does lag a bit for me when there’s a ton of bloom going on. that has made certain parts easier because the baddies slow down. and yeah i’ve quit out of it while i still had 6 lives because it was time to do something but it’s still an adrenaline rush. i think saying you can play “indefinitely” means it’s too easy isn’t right. actually it gets quite frantic if you play it long enough especially if you run out of bombs and simply put you cannot win this game. you can only beat your high score. how is that easy? adding bosses would wreck it. it would make the game finite. games like this are supposed to be “see how far you can go.” they aren’t supposed to have an ending. i can understand old school arcade games might not be everyone’s favorite flavor but i say nice job! i wouldn’t change a thing… (except for making in it unity of course  )

Hi pete,

a) On my computer it runs with 6ms on grid 13 and i don’t feel it’s easy. Most of the time i fail to reach one million. If you play it on a slower computer then i suggest you alter the gfx-set to medium or low and change to grid 0 or 1 which are easier to handle by gfx-card.

b) Again it seems that people don’t read this at all… :O)

o Pressing F1 turns Cheatmode on and off so you can see how much time it takes to render the scene on your computer.
o Pressing F3 during the game switches through the grids. I did implement 14 in this version.
o Pressing F4 alters the amount of stars in the background. Change this to zero for maximum tweaking.

c) I’m not resonsible for the lacking od delta timing in this game. See the text on my website for what i did (worked on gridcode, particles and gfx). Play kaboom if you want delta-timing ;O)

ok maybe i said easy when i should have said the gameplay is simple. as i said, the game’s a blast! takes me back to my days of playing tempest for 16 hours straight. i’ll try grid 13 and let you know if i hit 1 mil. i did understand how to change the gfx settings - i just wanted it on “oooo… prettty…” more than i mind the lag. my card can handle it (9800). my cpu is slow though (733 g4).
