BuildWorld

Hello! I am currently building a game called BuildWorld! Yes, you guessed, it is a Minecraft clone. However, I have some stuff in store to steer it away from the Minecraft Direction, into its own direction. Now, do not criticize too harshly, because this is my first game, I am devoting five hours or more per day (And I still have Middle School, 8th Grade), and I am relatively new to the Unity stuff.

Meanwhile, I would LOVE to give credit to MinePackage, which to me is like a godsend from heaven, for a developer who gave up on coding BuildCraft, a week ago, in favor of a better approach using packages from Unity.

The current mode is creative, and with no building function (I am working on that). Right now, I also am working on the implementation of more trees, and possibly another biome. I will soon change the game to use a generator that slightly varies from the original MinePackage one, to keep its originality (This is kind of hard, as I usually develop browser based stuff in HTML5, so I am not used to Java and C++). The current version is v0.0.1.4.8.4.4 Classic
, as I follows the Minecrafft Development style.

Here is the changelog.

(First Known Version, did not use MinePackage at this point)
v0.0.0.1 Classic
*Game had basic features, of block destruction and such. The world was very limited, and the terrain generation was horrible.
Bugs:
*The Texture packs never loaded, resulting in a completely black world with blue sky.

v0.01.2 Classic
*Game received bigger worlds, and a fix for texture pack glitch
Bugs
*The game loaded, but everything looked like a grass block. Oops.

v0.01.3 Classic
*Game received bigger worlds, with new texture
Bugs

  • Texture pack glitch worsened, and everything returned to black.

v0.01.4 Classic
*Now uses a modifed version of MinePackage.
*More variation in generation. Hills, cliffs, overhangs, the works…

  • Texture-pack glitch fixed. It better never come back.
    Bugs
*Cannot Build. (The older versions had building)

v0.0.1.4.3 Classic
*Bug Fixes. Rendering problem fixed.
Bugs
*Still cannot build.
*Seeing through blocks

v0.0.1.4.7 Classic
*Clouds Added to Game (I mean 2D, stationary clouds. Might as well skybox them, more of a texturepack addition…)
*Code for Save Feature added, however it is inactivated, and thus, you still cannot save. Saving will be implemented soon.
Bugs
*Still Cannot Build

v0.0.1.4.8.4.4 Classic
*Shortened time it takes to break a block.
Bugs
*Still Cannot Build

v0.01.5 Classic
Ended Use Of Any Package, But Will Still Sometimes Use Code From Other Packages.
So, thats about it.

Future crap.

v.0.1.6 Update

*Bug Fixes
*Possibly Winter Biome
*Possibly Building Feature
*Desert Biome
*Working on new mob, called a cow, to add life to your worlds.
*A better terrain generator
*Save feature. (Confirmed.)
*Infinite Worlds (Possibly.)
*GUI System
*Survival Mode
*Inventory System
*Health System.

For all these features to come, a good threee months is estimated.

Anyways, here is the link.

ATTENETION!: DEVELOPMENT ON THIS GAME HAS BEEN ABONDONED.

Webplayer Please!

I don’t like Minecraft clones (or any other clone at that that are like this). Its a great learning experience but, in my honest opinion it is not right to use another persons idea to recreate.

Not being harsh. Only being honest and honestly High school Math is easy.

Also Minecraft clones are too overly made. You’d have a better chance creating something new than copying someone else.

This is being made at the request of a close friend of mine. So, don’t call me “COPIER”, blame my friend.

I’m not blaming anyone. I am only stating that Clones are not good. This is all my opinion.

Yeah clones are always a bad idea, but you really can’t help it.

Down the line it sort of all copies one another, i believe it brached off around 6 types:

  • Sandbox
  • Horror
  • Action
  • RPG
  • Platformers
  • Adventure

There are more but seriously, eventually far enough back they all “copy” one another

I have to disagree with your statements here  Pretty much every game made in the last 30 years has been a clone of something. By your statement, we shouldn’t have ANY fps past the doom series. Hmmm but Wolfenstein came before that, shoulda stopped there. Oh wait…Ultima Underworld was a FPS RPG. Dang…shoulda stopped there.

There’s a difference between blatantly copying someone else’s work, and being inspired by it to create your own work. But SOME elements probably will be the same…it doesn’t make it a CLONE.
Minepackage was totally inspired by minecraft, open source, and with the intent to expand and add features Minecraft didn’t have. That’s not a clone. That’s progress.

@HelloTherePeople: Good luck with Minepackage. I hope it inspires you (or someone) to take it to interesting and creative places.

Agree’d!. Your project is looking very good so keep going!

Can we keep this on topic please. If people want to make clones of games then that is their choice. Feel free to critique what is presented but don’t be a jerk and question motivations.

I think you have made something really cool. It’s a good learning experience and you should be able to take these skills into more unique directions in the future

I’m interested in this, like with all sandbox type games

I hope your actual gameplay (besides adjusting terrain and building ) will be different from minecraft though. Try to look for some unique game experiences ( or some not very common ). Luckily I’m not the only one starting this early with gamedevelopment

I just gave a minor update, which adds 2D, Non-Moving clouds. Save feature is close to being implemented.

Another 8th grader here. Good luck on the project - just be sure to steer away from making it completely like Mincecraft. Add your own flair.

Just how many kids are there on this forum? And, God, how can so many know programming? Is there some little Einstein bug going around?

Seriously, it seems like every nerd used to spend their time reading or doing other nerdy things like building robots. Now anyone with at least a slight computer interest is programming.

To the “clone-accusers”: just remember that up until the early 2000s, the term “Doom clone” that not yet been supplanted by “first person shooter”. So what may be “Minecraft clone” now is a “3PS builder” in the 2020s!

Ok, so I have some code from the wiki, for a decorator (I plan to use this for building feature), but it keeps saying “The type or namespace “IDecorator” could not be found, are you missing a directive…” I need this badly for a building function…

Here’s the link to the article.

Hell I have 3 sixteen year olds, a 12 year old, a 13 year old and a 23 year old in my team.

You’d be suprised at how hard they work

It even runs on my schools Windows 98 Computers!!! Yes!

PMed about possible information

Like Minecraft, I will be releasing it while in development. Link posted.

I just deleted a bunch of posts from this thread from AFTER I said keep it on topic.

So keep it on topic! Last warning or else one week forum bans.

This looks really cool!

A possible idea - maybe just set the map-creation part as a standalone package for the Asset Store? That alone would be useful for a number of genres, but still with the quasi-voxel look.
