Complete beginner (400447)

Hi there,

Bear with me. What are the prerequisites in terms of technical skills to make use of Unity (specifically for the iPhone)? Do you need any programming skills or experience with scripting or is everything (more or less) done in a GUI?

Thanks

Marque Pierre

Yes, you need to know how to program. Knowledge of some kind of higher-level language is very helpful.

What programming languages would I need a proficiency in?

Something high-level, doesn’t really matter. Java, Actionscript, C#, Javascript, etc. C# directly translates to Unity (and is a lot like Java), Javascript sort of translates to Unity (the “Javascript” in Unity is proprietary and has significant differences). But the important thing is knowing how to program at all; learning the syntax of another language is fairly trivial. The language I had been using most prior to getting into Unity was Perl, and I was getting around in Unity with Javascript inside a day.

Just in case you might still be a little confused,…

A “high-level” language doesn’t exactly mean how it may sound to a lay person. “High level” doesn’t require a higher level of skill or knowledge than a “low level” language. It’s actually the opposite. High level languages tend to be more user friendly.

If you never program object oriented (like me) get into some ActionScript. Things will be much more clear to you what all those . everywhere mean. You will switch easily to UnityScript.

I wish someone told me that before.

Marque,
Check out this post and I suggest also reading through the Unity tutorials to wrap your brain around the scripting in Unity.

This post covers alot of Javascript functionality in Unity: http://tinyurl.com/ylgnbnt

Agreed, but Unity should have a starter template available for the three major genres which in my opinion are Flying games,Car racing games,First/third person adventure games.
I’m sure there will be some that will disagree with my opinion but thats ok.

Well, I don’t agree that those are the three major genres (or even that there are only three), and I also don’t agree that this would actually help anyone. I think the existing tutorials are enough for most people to get a good understanding of how to do things in Unity. (And tutorials are there to learn how to use Unity, not to do your game for you.) Although more tutorials wouldn’t go amiss, I’m sure.
